So far so good on FCPx. I'm well aware of all the objections, and can't argue with many of them. But they are all outweighed by the fact that I am sitting here able to edit on FCP, when earlier versions had such complexity and such a learning curve, I could not.

Can anyone suggest a basic work approach for the following project? I filmed a woman giving an identical speech 3 times. So I will import all 3 versions. I want to make a hilites film of this one hour talk, which will only be about 5 minutes long. I want to take some of the best sentences from each version. How do I group her sections or chapters in some what that makes sense? I will need to quickly look at 3 versions of the same sentence, choose one, put it in the final timeline, then move on.

I'm confused. Would I somehow cut all the pieces up before I use the timeline, and somehow link them to each other? Would I pull all 3 speeches down into the timeline area, then select some. Please give ma work approach. I have not yet mastered this things about related clips can be made to associate with each other. If, for example, I have 3 introductions to the speech, can I make all three of those somehow stay together in some sort of sub project?

How would you do this?

Hi Bruce,

with FCP X there is an easy way to do it. In order to evitate confusion prepare the "subclips" using the favorite feature: define the range with the range tool or by using "i" and "o" and press "f". Name every range accordingly, for example by scene and take.
Make the first rough cut, cutting together all scenes from the first take. Then, scene by scene, drag the favorites (the distinctive scenes) from the second take, onto the corresponding scene of the first take, but without releasing the mouse. After a second a plus sign will appear over the clip, so release the mouse button. Now a menu will appear for the various replacement options. Choose "Add to audition" and inside the clip's title bar will appear a new icon similar to a spotlight. Repeat the same step for the third take and now You have three different versions almost synchronized. By clicking on the audition icon appears a list of the three different takes for the chosen clip, with a simple mouse click You decide which to show up in the storyline.
When You have so many clips to edit into a story, it may become handy to first describe as close as possible the source material using the extensive Metadata handling of FCP X. Assign keywords rating the take, pointing out the strength or weakness of a particular take. At the end only by reading Your rating the decision which take to choose will be taken nearly by itself.
