Synch question was created by Lee Patterson
Hi. Here's a scenario I recently had.
3 camera shoot and my Marantz Pmd660 capturing lav and boom sound
On set sound was up to speed and we called action. This sometimes involved 3/4 takes of scenes.
In the edit we chose the best take from the angle(s) we wanted to use.
Once we had picture lock I started to think about audio replacement= camera audio replaced by Marantz master audio.
I had to mark (and edit) the whole thing manualy as i had no idea about a workflow that could leverage automatic synch.
Anyone have any thoughts?
thanks

In the Event Browser, highlight the camera shot, Command-click to also highlight the PMD660 clip for that shot, right-click either and chose the sync clips option.

Thanks BenB, I know the process for manually tying together the shots. However, when the whole work has 3/4/5 takes of individual scenes and 3 cameras capturing them, then at the edit we only choose one take or splice two/three angles, I don't want to spend time doing 3 or 4 times the work synching up material that isn't part of the final cut. I would like some automated way of taking the final edit, perhaps outputting a reference movie, importing it to the event browser and then tell the audio from the PMD to go and weld itself intelligently to the shots in the final edit. I'm probably asking too much of the software, I just don't want to own a dog and then bark myself;)

Nope, the telepathic artificial intelligence interface for FCP X hasn't been released yet.
You want shots to intelligently match themselves up with no effort on your part?
Edit with the camera shots only. Then sync only what you need and do replace edits.
If you record on a dual system as you are, you have to do the leg work of syncing the audio and video files. I'm not sure what "3 or 4 times the work" means. Syncing a video and audio clip together only take 3 seconds. Even with Plural Eyes you have to specify what clips go together like this.
You could always use a JuiceBox and record audio directly to the camera and save a ton of time and drive space?
Maybe I'm not following what you're looking for.

3/4 times the work was me thinking that you meant to tie up the audio to all the takes prior to doing the edit, I now understand that you meant exactly what I did in the job, i.e. revisit the audio after picture lock and synch prior to hand-off for CC and grading and finishing. I have a plan and when I get 30 minutes I am going to try an experiment that may or may not work. thanks for taking an interest and giving over some time.

The shoot used 3 DSLR's none of them have gain control or monitoring functions, way to scary to send audio to those guys and they only have two available channels and I had 5 audio sources, juice box is ok but far from ideal as there are too many unknowns.

I hate to sound like some kind of judgmental "grownup", but it's the lazy man who works the hardest. It seems to me, you do a little housekeeping at the beginning of the edit and these problems take care of themselves.
The FCPX workflow rewards a little prep work if you keyword your stuff, mark favorites and organize your footage and then start cutting. Most production problems stem from wanting to "skip" pre-production and in my experience, edit messes seem to follow "just wanting to get cutting"...
