Just lost 2+ hours of work because FCP X 10.0.5 crashed on a project that apparently was getting too complex for it too handle. It's the same project that is giving me those bizarre single-frame flashes occasionally at the end of beginning of clips, which probably suggests the project was corrupted somewhere along the line.

Why can't we have a basic save feature?

...just had to vent. Oh well, back to work!

If you lost that much work it sounds like you had the save/undo disable bug affect you. The work around is to duplicate the project at regular points which forces a save.

Did you try opening up the backup of the project database that FCP X makes?

just to add, I’ve been burned a few times now with losing work due to the poor handling of auto-save or lack of…

I undertand this whole database thing and that its supposed to be rock solid well… its not, I’ve never lost any work in FCP4.5-7 but I lost work within the 1st month of FCPX and again with 10.0.2.
Luckily it wasn’t too much work but that has still left a very bad taste in my mouth regarding the way FCPX handles data.

So far so good with the latest patches. When this did happen I noticed that it was when the undo button was grayed out and that I wasn't able to undo anything that FCPX was not saving any data. If you see this kind of behavior within FCPX time to reboot and cut your losses.

Has anyone found a fix for this or the cause of the issue or has it been completely resolved with the latest patch?

Regardless we need a much better auto-save/versioning feature.

Pro Versioner does look great and I will definitely be looking into that

Mickey, I already mentioned about how to work around the greyed out undo/autosave issue. It doesn't matter how long its been since you've been greyed out - you duplicate the project and it forces a save and you don't lose any work. Then reboot and use the duplicate. Annoying but less annoying than losing hours of work. I don't advise assuming you can carry on and duplicate later as if it crashes, you are screwed. I told Apple about the persistence of this problem and one of them contacted me about it so they're interested in fixing issues. For me, it only ever happens when using the color board so I always check to see if the undo is greyed out after doing a color correction.
