Custom Footage Size

Hey all. I'm editing a project just for fun with some footage that was shot using the 8MM app on iPhone. The app records the footage at 960 x 720 with square pixels. Now the Problem that I'm getting is that every time that I bring it in to FCP X, it thinks that it's 1280 x 720 HD footage (or 960 x 720 with a .75 pixel aspect ratio), so it stretches the footage out. I have no idea what I can do to fix it. I've seen this tutorial ( library.creativecow.net/payton_t/FCPX_Cu...solution-Timelines/1 ) on how to do custom resolutions, but it doesn't really help with the problem of FCP X converting the video on import. I've tried converting the footage using Compressor to make sure the pixels were set to square as well as unchecking the create optimized media box before importing, but neither of those worked. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Just because I'm visual, here's a picture of what the footage is supposed to look like as well as what FCP X has done to it and all the clip info.

Unfortunately there is no way to set the pixel aspect ratio in FCPX. The only thing you could do would be to use the trasnform function to set the aspect ratio.

Thinking out loud here - could one edit as 'normal' (allowing FCPX to bugger up the aspect ratio) within a Storyline and follow these steps:

Final Cut Pro X doesn't have a 720 pixel high project default with an aspect ratio of 4:3, which means it can't deal with your footage in a standard project.

I suggest that you

1. Import your clips into an event
2. Select one of your clips
3. Make a copy of it - using Duplicate from the File menu
4. Double-click the name of your duplicate and give it the name of your project
5. Open the clip into its own timeline - using Open in Timeline from the Clip menu, or get shortcut menu access to the command by right- or control-clicking the clip

You should then have a timeline with the correct frame size and frame rate. You can edit the other clips you imported into this timeline, edit away and export using the Share menu.
