Just an FYI, I've read the first six (of 12) lessons in the soon to be released APTS book for FCP X. This is the official Apple Authorized Training text book. Comes with a DVD, is hands on, and it will teach you stuff not in any other tutorial anywhere. As a trainer, it's looking like a class I'm going to love teaching, so far. Much easier, more relaxed pace than past books. Really nice and fun to go through.

If you have an iPad, you can get the eBook version, too, which is cheaper. It comes with a link to download the lesson media that comes on the DVD, also. I've per-ordered mine eBook version already.

All I can say so far is, it's really well done and shows some short cuts and workflows that will be very enlightening. And it uses footage from a variety of cameras, and a wider variety of project types than before.

Late September release date right now, can't wait for the final copy to be shipped.

I'll say this much. By NAB next year, it'll be VERY grown up. It already is in it's current state. Most folks don't know half of what it'll do. Nor to many understand the concepts and workflows. The book will tell you a lot of what you do know, and give some details about what you don't know. What I've seen does not hint at any updates yet. Again, according to Apple, if it's not on their web site, it doesn't exist yet, and there's no official word about anything. That's just how they roll. But it will be a fun book to work with.

And yes, there is a whale. LOL!

Not sure what you mean about the whale.

But I do hope to see some major features in the next update!
Round tripping to Motion and back.
Photoshop layered file support
Custom sequence or projects
Maybe another custom view where you only have the timeline on one screen.

Lots of things are coming. No one knows when. But they are coming. Apple is watching and listening to what folks are doing with it, and it will evolved in response to the market. The next 6-12 months will be interesting.

Sequences? There's no such thing as a Sequence in FCP X. Compound Clips are similar, but even then, not the same thing, as they can do much more than an antiquated Sequence.

BenB wrote: Sequences? There's no such thing as a Sequence in FCP X.

And... that is why I wrote Sequence or Projects. How ever you like to pick your vocabulary.

But Projects in FCP X are nothing like Sequences in FCP 7, not by a long shot, not in any way shape or manner.

They can't be nested.
They can't be copy and pasted.
They can't live in more than one Timeline.

No comparison what so ever.

Well many FCPX Trainers are referring the Projects as Sequences.
And that they can't be copy and pasted etc... just means that are not that flexible. lol

As an Apple Certified Master Trainer, I'm not sure what other "trainers" you're talking about.

Steve Martin and I and other Apple Certified Trainers have spoken to each other about this, and the consensus is that referring to Projects at Sequences is just flat our WRONG and technically very inaccurate. This has even been discussed on an ACT only forum, and it's agreed.

A Compound Clip is the closest thing to a Sequence as we have in X, and even Compound Clips are more powerful and flexible than Sequences.

The bottom line is, people need to drop the term "Sequence", as that does not exist in FCP X in any shape, manner, or form. Projects do not resemble Sequences in any way.

We no have Timelines, which can be a clip, a compound clip, or a project. But there's no such thing as a Sequence in FCP X, period. And to call a Project a Sequence is just as wrong and misguided as it can be. It's not even being picky about semantics, it's flat out not the same thing, period.

hmmm I love how much energy you putting into this. :silly:
What you say about this Quote:

Project itself now functions as your sequence

Like someone saying it's not FCPX it's FCP 10. lol

That quote is flat our wrong, period.

And it is FCP roman numeral 10. But some folks are ignorant and pronounce the letter "x".

Steve did indeed write that early on. But I've had conversations with him, email and in person, and that's not how he approaches it any more. I'm just stating technical facts here, noting emotional involved.
