Great arguments, Ben. It's the end of the dinosaur age all over again.

Actually no, Blu Ray is not on the upswing at all in any part of the world. It never has been. It's never shown the numbers it was originally expected to. Online downnload/rentals have seriously hurt Blu Ray from the beginning.

Actually no?? The sales went up 35% for 2011

BD disc sales in the United States will reach about 115 million units in 2011, compared with 85 million units in 2010

In Europe, BD disc sales will balloon 42% to 63 million units, compared with 44 million units last year — driven by strong adoption in Germany. Global BD disc sales will increase to 234 million units, up 45% from 161 million units in 2010.

Blu-Ray.com

Downloads are good I guess but until the buying world gets 99% Internet coverage physical media will be available.
Besides I stop buying from iTunes for example cause of no 1080p, no 7.1 master sound track and looked horrible (compression artifacts) compared to the Blu-Ray.
Thats my opinion I guess I rather get full bang and experience. That is why I still can't understand why people stream the movies over the internet. besides of the fact it bad for the business.

I've not seen any problems with the progressive downloads in iTunes or other rentals. And I guess the numbers I have are very different than the ones you quote. Unless you're quoting numbers for optical rentals and purchases in general, not only Blu Ray. But even today Blu Ray purchases and rentals are not on par with SD DVD's before the days of online rental/purchase.

Don't know where the "fact" of it being bad for business. I do a ton of business producing material for corporate trainings, demos, digital signage, and it's all delivered online. I've not touched any form of DVD in almost three years for my business. Optical media is still around, but not as strong as it once was, and is fading away along with video tape and film.

I done some market research into this a few years ago and got a bit of a surprise. I was looking mainly into the UK and I have no idea how the figures have been since then as I never pursued the venture.

DVD and Blu-Ray Sales Statistics

Source: The British Video Association 2009

The percentages of DVD and Blu-Ray sales show that while Blu-Ray is now becoming recognised as the standard Hi-Definition delivery format there is still a massive market for DVD.

According to The International Video Federation, and in relation to Europe, DVD has continued to climb in sales since its release. The UK was an early adopter of High Definition, purchasing 1.09 million HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs in 2007. This is compared to the next closest country in Europe being France at 0.54 million.

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray sales figures of 2006 are close to zero throughout Europe.

In 2008 Blu-Ray won the format war over HD-DVD and is now seen as the highest quality delivery format for Hi-Definition video content.

In the UK's first 6 months of 2009 DVD sales fell, for the first time, by 9.5%.

In the same 6 month period Blu-Ray sales rose by a massive 231%

This gives sales figures over a 6 month period, within the UK alone, of 99.6 million DVD's and a rapidly increasing 3.1 million Blu-Ray discs.

These figures are reinforced when comparing DVD's first 2 years on the retail shelves selling 1.2 million players with Blu-Ray selling 2.5 million players over its first 2 years.

Source: Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

These figures don't include Sony's Play Station 3 games console which plays Blu-Ray discs and has sold, worldwide, over 30 million units since 2006.

This games console is still climbing in sales. In the first 3 quarters of 2009 it had already outsold it's complete 2008 figures which in turn out sold 2007 which also out sold 2006.

This is of course against the trend and according to Sony's "Peter Dille" related to problems with poor levels of stock.

I also seen an interview with a representative (can't remember his position) from www.lovefilm.com recently, he was adamant that they have no plans to remove DVD/Blu-Ray from their services as demand is high.

And those numbers pale in comparison to past optical media sales, and to online. Although they sound great by themselves. Give it a couple of years, it's not as strong as the market that depends on it pretends it to be.

I'm curious about on-line sales figures and may do some research into it soon. But I agree, it's why I never pursued the venture in favour of holding out to see how online figures settle.

I think my decision got backed up by the love film guy. They won't remove the service, but their prices for it dropped dramatically at that time, which is also when they introduced steamed content.
