Mojave Oh no Apple
I have been joking about Microsoft's ad campaign about their new OS "Mojave" (remember that?) in which MS showed off Mojave as a new improved OS over it's buggy and despised Vista OS. What a terrible campaign by MS who that thought the only way to get people to change their minds about Vista was to "trick" people with the fake name Mojave. Why would Apple use this name when there are lots of complaints about Apple software quality??? Both iOS and macOS has been suffering with QC issues of late, so why invite MS - Apple comparisons??? All the more real in that Apple is acknowledging that iOS 12 and "Mojave" are largely quality focus/fixes??
Having said all this, there are some interesting improvements, new features coming out. Dark Mode, better Quick Look, group FaceTime; audio and video with up to 32 participants, AR is really seeing lots of action. All interesting.
OTOH there are still real issues not being addressed.
While App Store gets some GUI "looks" improvements, it still doesn't allow tabs, comparisons of apps and Apple continues with multiple app stores for the different platforms(5or6???). I look for both Mac and iOS app integration so would appreciate being able to review and purchase both versions at one go. Just to be able to see if an app has both versions is a PITA launching 2 or more app stores. Apple just keeps adding stores??? Search on the App Store is horrible.
iTunes is still a POS! Talk about needing a MAJOR rewrite!
Apple IDs are a major mess. Still can't merge IDs
Apple is officially deprecating Open CL/GL in favor of Metal 2. Apple hasn't updated Open CL/GL since around 2010. Way behind versions and now will not be updated going forward. It is up to developers to rewrite apps to utilize Metal. While Open CL/GL are very long in the tooth, many programs still use it and at least some apps run much slower on Macs due to Apple not supporting later versions.
There is an independent integration of Vulcan to Macs. Vulcan is a competing graphics engine to Metal, but Apple is not officially supporting it. Vulcan is being implemented by lots of apps, so without translators developers have to write a Mac app version to fully optimize code. I like Metal, but it ain't universal!
Disappointing not to see any mention of Pro Apps in Keynote, but I expect that it will be in sessions. Think the last few years have been about developing APFS and some underlying code base, future will be about taking advantage of this base.
Surprised we haven't seen concurrent editing in FCPX. The ability to split Libraries, nanosecond time signatures, and write on demand is now part of OS, so why not collaborative concurrent editing?
Seems that better "Round Tripping" should happen and Apple needs to allow better cross app integration at least within Apple apps, more than just the current "extensions" systems interface. Nothing new since Sierra. Still want LPX controls like a "mixer" and sub channels for "lanes". Sandboxing needs improvement to allow better app communications.
Disk Utility needs lots of work. APFS is coming to Fusion drives and HDDs.
Apple still has many 32bit apps. What will happen to them. Many of the "Core" technology/apps are 32bit inside Apple frameworks.
Well looking forward to what WWDC revels but really hate the name "Mojave". Too many associations and jokes for me. "A rose by any other name…"
Be kind, Happy Editing, Greg

interesting read, most doesn't match my observation/reality/needs (hobbyist speaking here!), what was this called? Selective reception? …
Although I worked in the ad industry for quiet two decades, I missed that Mojave-thingie, never heard of (maybe a local campaign?) … hmm, indeed a not too smart decision from Schiller&friends to choose such a contaminated name.
'Dark mode' with an already dark app floors my imagination… :silly:
We'll see …
iTunes, omg… Apple lost me with version …8? 10? LOL
Have to update my iPhoto Lib… missed that auto-tagging for years!
conc. 'video' - being still a nay-sayer about 360° (except for reframing), I'm a huge fan of AR (using Photopills for years - AR long before it was called AR), so, as that <yawn> 360°-stuff found its way into FC, integration of the new file-format USDZ will be interesting … sort-of 3D-objects thru the backdoor, hm?
… guess, AFPS for FusionDrives is one of the biggest but under the radar news … how many of installed base is FD equipped? … (not mine, pure SSD here! Don't trust that thing…)
speaking of base: any given day happy, my antique, under-powered set-up (2012 MacMini) is still supported, handling (most of…) the glitz introduced since, 3D text, 4k, and on a more academic level rec2020 and proResRAW …
yes, lots of roadworks anyhow, wish-/fix-lists for FC (and Motion…) are long and longer … but, we all learned, Cupertino moves in mysterious ways (e.g. still don't get it, why multiple YT exports made it to top-priority)
guessing, that announced EOL of OCL/OGL will stir up a lot of people, … or, does already (?)
sooo, _I_ am looking forward to Mojave …
(Moyafe? Mochafé? Mojavee? … ok, nick picking LOL)

To see the speed comparison using Resolve is not at all shocking anymore, I would have been more surprised if FCPX had been used, sad it was not used, but given how little press and website space is used for pro apps.
Will this new standard be compatible with fcpx? Or did this keynote just signal the death of pro apps in favour of rental via Adobe? I suspect going forward in the next 18-24 months, pro apps will be shuttered in favour of off site rental..after all it makes financial sense to shutter pro apps, why maintain an expensive dev team when there is a company with the resources out there able to do it?
The question is mac and ios merging...yes of course, it is obvious this is the case, you don't take ios apps and force them to work on a mac if you don't intend to merge into 1 ecosystem, after all win10 is 1 ecosystem, tablet and laptop/desktop and it works...I don't like it, but hey who am i???
Mojave will be the last macos of any kind, fcpx will be shuttered in the next 2 years, the fact that the simple bugs are not being dealt with, and stupid aspects promoted, look it is simple, Apple could have in 30 seconds created a sandbox for all 32bit apps, basically what they did for "news" app from ios to force it to work on the mac...
The fact it has been well over a decade since the last mac pro update, the tube was a disaster, now recycled as a stupid home device not even capable of playing mp3...Why would Apple carry on development of hardware other than the ifone and ipad? Laptops are just no longer a viable professional device..
The data rates of video are way beyond that of any laptop, from the chips to the gpu, what you need is a device that really needs a screen and 64GB of RAM, and that will not fit into a macbookpro footprint.
So video editing away from a desktop makes no sense, and where can all this processor power be found...the cloud, the creative cloud, and who owns this cloud...yip Apple's best friend...
So how going forward post WWDC how can anyone deny that the future of our beloved NLE secure? Apple has never once shown any sort of love for fcpx...only recently it was the kiss of death if you so much as mentioned you were privy to an advanced version...
Will Mojave become the OS you have to be on in order to upgrade FCPX? Actually I kind of hope that Apple makes the announcement that pro apps will be shuttered then we know where we stand, do we carry on living with this fear of shuttered apps, when the future of creative cloud and resolve is so bright...
Should we abandon any hope for fcpx and head towards rental or resolve??

I had a quick peek at the WWDC labs list for 2018, not a single minute to pro apps...so in a week with thousands of members of the nerd herd..not one is a member of herd of nerds that use fcpx...
That speaks very loudly to the very loud sound of the shutter doors slamming shut...

… no session for ANY app (iWorks, Keynote, Mail…)
no wonder: what do external developers have to do with internal applications??
And: Fully agree, only an idiot sees that.-

I can think of a use of fcpx+mail of fcpx+keynote, of iworks+fcpx...
Creating a mail version of an xml that can be emailed would be so handy, as an example...what is wrong with that??

And FCPX was on the big screen.

I should be rejoicing about MS Vista and Mojave as this was when I finally convinced the rest of family to get Mac computers and I no longer had to support Windows. My last Windows experience was "Mojave" as I have been joking for the last 10 years. Just thought it was a horrible MS ad campaign.
It was also very funny that most of the MS commercials were created by marketing companies that used Macs.
So my Off Topic thread was just to say I think there are other California places for names, Big Sur, Trinity, Shasta , Redwoods, (maybe not Death Valley) that do not have the associations with MS. ( I live in Southern CA)
OTOH, there will be a lot to digest in new OS's. I really like the privacy aspect that Apple keeps promoting.
"NO" iOS will not replace macOS, but giving developers the tools (Swift, common frameworks/libraries, etc…) is a good thing for developers and users. There are lots of programs that I would like to see on both platforms, so if code can be shared, this will encourage developers to release similar apps that can share info, like Pixelmator.
While I totally disagree with MsJ, macOS is not dead, another area that iOS merges with Macs is the inclusion of T2 chips and reusing work already done to improve macOS. If new MBP's included iPhoneX sensors and facial ID, I wouldn't be unhappy.
AR is pretty fascinating to me and I can see lots of applications for video work and animation. Wonder if(when) we will see the FaceTime (front facing camera) sensors ever being used in rear cameras(better sensors) or independent cameras. Easy CGI maybe? In 360 videos maybe?? Memoji dancers in the Mojave desert :silly:

And why does every macOS have to glorify self-centered California? I say the next version be called macOS 10.15 Atchafalaya, or macOS 10.16 Tahlequah.

… attach iPhone to your regular camera, 'multicam' both recordings, use Depth Info for green-free keying … now THAT would be nice 'n easy …
emojis … aaarghgh! Luckily, this year no member of board as talking pile of s…
Obviously, I'm way too old for this …
MacOs 10.17 'Schwarzwald' - wanna see/hear Craig + Co pronouncing that … LOL
(seriously: is it Mo-ch-ave, or Mo-y-ave??? Not a 100% consistant in keynote)

Again, WWDC is about third party developers, and this was constantly addressed through the whole keynote.
"Karsten tvos, watchos, iOS, macOS are all internal apps of some kind, so why would developers need them?"
OMG that is so misinformed, or misleading, that it should be deleted. All of those are OPERATING SYSTEMS that "apps" run on! Developers need to write their own apps to run of those OS's! Without them there's nothing for third party developers to do! omg... who here is all for being sober and rational as an adult?
FYI, I'm running developer beta of Mojave, it is increasing my productivity just with the new Finder tools alone. It is easer on my eyes with Dark Mode. And I have zero hiccups in any of the Apple pro apps so far. I'm still trying to unravel the "Pro Label" mystery though, very intreating, shows Apple is moving in a very positive, strong directly with pro apps.
OK, back to the mindless negativity based on fantasy.

Some really interesting changes to Xcode and Swift.
Will take some time to go through as I'm getting ready for long cross country road trip. Back to Maine to do another movie and hopefully inspire the next generations in video making.
Ben I agree, lots to like in Mojave/Atchafalaya.
As you say, Finder alone has some great features, along with QuickLook.
My wife REALLY needs stacks. Her desktop is a mess, don't tell her I said so
QL editing :woohoo: Being able to trim audio and video w/o opening an app is nice!
The whole screen capture rewrite including the ability to capture from iOS devices direct to Macs, yessiree! Maybe dancing Memoji's in the Mojave is not so fantasy after all. iPhone scanning too
Darkmode
Hey Ben, a question; What does privacy mode look like in Safari? Currently the URL field is black in HS so easy to tell, but in Dark Mode, how is it differentiated? Is it white?
Just read something that makes me happy is that DVD player has been rewritten/updated to 64bit. Thought Apple might abandon optical discs support altogether. Now to see if the creation side has been rewritten in core services. Create Disc, etc…, very old code, 2009??? I still have to deliver DVDs and Blu-rays all the time. Wouldn't surprise me if this requires new versions of Toast, VLC, Handbrake.
Well Ben you are brave, hope you keep us updated on using new OS, especially with ProApps. Assume this is not on your main computer?? I will definitely be waiting to upgrade and will start with an external ssd test drive. When I think it is ready, I load on internal and make a clone of my current (old) system to the test ssd. Just the way I roll. I only upgraded to HS when FCPX forced me to. Was still on El Capitan. Never did Sierra.
Happy Editing everyone!

Dark Mode was odd at first, but after less than two days, I'm very addicted to it.
The pro apps (LPX, FCPX, Mot, Comp) all have the text "Pro Label" on the launch screen. I've no clue what that means. I feel it is a place holder for some "pro app" logo Apple will start using when Mohave is publicly released.
I'm running it on my home iMac Pro, not at the TV station. This is fun having a new Mac I can be free wheeling and care free with.
Not sure if I see a speed increase or not. That's such a subjective thing, too. You can't trust what you "feel" is faster or slower. Has to be timed.
But yeah, I'd like to see OS names like Rome, Fuji, Saxony, Nuuk, etc. But they'd have to start with Atchafalaya or Etowah.
Side Note; I had some files to bring to the station with me tomorrow morning (Mon) and left my regular portable drive in my office at the station. I dug up two very old FW800 / ESATA drives (OWC 1 TB & G-Tech 500 GB), both formate ExFat. I started to copy files to one, and it was going to take like 2 hours. Half way through I canceled the copy, reformatted that drive as APFS, and started the copy over again. Less than 10 minutes it was done with the copy. Tested the other drive, same results. So that says something for APFS being a time saver copying files. Just found that really interesting.

interesting…asked a friend, who participates in the public-beta of Mojave… she told me, only the 'video'-apps (FC, M,Comp) have this 'sticker'; Aperture, LPX and MainStage lack it…
… has to be some temp placeholder - it is so off-layout… LOL
… and a bit tautological, isn't it: FC_pro_X labeled as a _pro_App
