First impression: free espresso - excellent!
Very nice location, nicely prepped, estm. +20 BM hosts and hostess, a corner with Ursa Mini, several work-places with the diff. external controllers and finally a huge Teaching Area, with ~30 17” laptops, preinstalled files & folder.
What could possibly go wrong?
Rory asked for warm-up, who uses what - in the dark, I’d say, 33% Premiere, lots of FCpro7 (!), three or four (?) FCPX, …
“When you’re from FC7 or Premiere, you will feel comfortable in a minute”
… and rocket-launch:
In the announcement, I read ‘Training Classes’ = my expectation: “Launch DaVinci and hit new project…”
Not so…
Rory offered a blazing fast overview, what’s new in vers.14 - I’d call it a ‘delta presentation’ - highlighting the differences, the new features - but assuming you’re familiar with the app, it’s layout, it’s shortcut.
… so, lil’ Karsten missed most parts, because searching that knob to make that window appear, Rory was talking about and working with.
No, he did an excellent job, within two hours touching every new aspect of this beast of software. Pheeww!
… sitting in the last row, I could see what happened on the other screens - clickideedooda, people listening, breathless but not ‘following’ what’s happening on the huge displays.
What got caught?
• a horror of GUI, that 17” is crowded with ‘info’ (why do have tracks to be called A and V?? I see that). No, ‘engineers’ must be happy, an overkill of ‘info’, several times you saw me creeping into the display, in hope to find the 3pt menu item that will do…somethin’.
• Media-management - Rory did his best to show how ‘easy’ it is to sort and rename and … clips. Looks like DVR offers keywords and smart-collections either, … I wasn’t able to find the demo files… Nope, I stay with FCPX.
• Color Correction - yep, great, no doubt, nodes, yep, I believe those will/have to come in some future Motion version… but no real news. What I didn't know: all those CC can be tracked…
• DVR has a stabiliser I HAVE to test! There was some demo file, a handheld cam, from the back of a movin' car, recording a bicyclist… and it did a hell of a job!! No SliceX/TrackX needed! Very intuitive…
If Apple should buy DaVinci, Roger (=coremelt) needs a new job
• speaking of effects… hmm, a) I missed it, or b) it wasn’t on todays shopping list. DVR14 comes with a few effects… and openFX seems to be the API for 3rd party stuff… no, I stay with my Motion/FCPX combo.
• Audio - yep, big thing, integration of Fairlight … not my domain… my chance for taking a deep breath and a mental pause.
• Export… yep, 5min about that… again, 'some' remembrance with FCPX/Destinations, oddly enough FCp7 as ‘target’ #4… but FCPX avail, although I couldn’t find xml or something for ‘swapping’ back/n forth.
• Multicam - …( yawn) been there, done that - only item which ‘boomed’ the demo computer. But Rory fixed that in a minute.
tl;dr:
Excellent Event, fast/never boring, masterfully presentation (Rory does use the app, he knows what he’s talking about…) - IF you are familiar with the product. No beginner's stuff. Not the presentation, not the app itself.
OK, nonsense of mine to believe a 3h class can teach me such a complex program. …-
What it DID taught me: Blackmagic is baiting deep in Adobes waters… who likes AE or AP will LOVE this GUI, with miles long menus, and submenus and subsubmenus and tons of numbers.
A few UI were nice, e.g. when you push a clip into another, it automatically creates a dissolve. Or, the fade-handle, is a big white dot at the ends of the clip - no 'magic hovering within 0.32 square-nanometers to make it appear…
Thanks, BM, for the tee and a funny lil’ mug
Next: that stabilizer!!

hmm... no doubt, the CC options are awesome (what I wrote and learned today: tracking is incredible easy!).
But edit?
'Edit' isn't just staple clips together - that was done with iMovie1 flawlessly…
Edit begins long before setting ins-and-outs; Media Management is pre-edit.
And, imho, BMDV has to learn a lot.
'it has all you need' - basics?
skimming = not found today in DVR… (can't be true?!)
favourizing = not found today in DVR… (how do you 'clean' imports??)
applying keyword ranges = … must exist, ok, I have to learn a lot…
Simon's super collection = …??
Haven't used BMDV for a serious project yet, haven't managed to study +1200 pgs of manual, not watching 100h of tuts available - probably I'm completely wrong.
From my very narrow perspective of a plugin-maker, DVR is mainly… useless
Seriously: any editor can create or adjust his customized lower3rds within a minute… in FCPX. No such thing, 'Motion for BMDVR' in sight. When you use it for the first 5-10 hours you will painstakingly miss FinalCuts plugin-ecosphere.
BMDVR has a bright future, no doubt, today's presentation mentioned several tools for collaboration, forgot to mention that in my lil' report.
=> DaVinci Resolve is clearly positioned against Premiere (Avid wasn't even mentioned today
But editing hours of Interviews, or material from a 3y travel, or sport-reports, or 'Canada's funniest Homevideo/ Bears edition', or any other 'Reality Show' or '10 most incredible long distance dunks' for Youtube… anything which demands a 'smart pre-edit', let FCPX unbeaten…
… aside, too much too small annotations in the GUI, … for my dead old eyes…

I hear and I am with you... but them top features are unique maybe for FCPX which can be easily added to a software like DaVinci. Which many people don't need or care about... that are not using FCPX.
Give it time they have added some major function since there last release vs FCPX... Audio Editing and Color Correction are majors which are lacking in FCPX!
