Portrait/bokeh/depth effect demo

macRumours has published a demo video of the new effect…



… which even Apple doesn't know how to call it:
In the menu bar it's 'Portrait', but, as demoed, it isn't limited to portraits.
And, in use, it's subtitled 'Depth Effect' << I like that!

And, finally, it's all about bokeh - and in my humble understanding of that word, it has zero bokeh.
Yes, tons of blur, but that word meant first place the 'quality' of the nice bubbles which represents the iris of the glas.... which the iP7 doesn't have.

excellent demo, answering almost all questions: limited to portraits - no, live preview -yes; saves pics with/without effect - yes; like real DoF - no; nice eyecandy - yes; avail for video too - no idea…

Impressive computation power!

… and to add some wiseguy yadda:
the French origin is pronounced bouquet, that Japanese leanword is spoken with an 'open mouth', u like o, and e like ä :woohoo:

Different people have different interpretations of of the meaning of Bokeh so "To each their own".
While in video we often mean the fuzzy light orbs, less so in straight photography, but is indeed created via aperture and elements inside lens.
According to Apple's own built in Dictionary…
bokeh |bōˈkā|
nounPhotography
the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens: a quick, visual survey of the foreground and background bokeh of a variety of lenses.

Still gotta give Apple credit for the effect.
No apparently doesn't work in Video (yet )

Also while the 28mm/e supports Image Stabilization, the longer "Telephoto" lens 56mm/e doesn't, too bad Seems like you need Image Stabilization more the longer the focal length.

Expect many more articles in the near future now that it is available in public beta in latest iOS 10 update.

Looking forward to seeing what 3rd parties do with the new APIs allowing access to RAW images. Apple's Image Processing chip looks cool, and amazing for a phone. Guess it's time to throw away my Nikon's and glass :silly:

Decided that this year is not my year to upgrade my phone, but very tempted. Need to start a video shoot to justify spending the $$ for a new Apple video camera. Next year with the 8K 360' upgrade iPhone 8+. :woohoo:
