Best Backup solution for small business
maybe someone here has a tip or can point me into good direction.
We are looking for good backup solution for our shop.
At the moment CCC is being used which is not a good solution since it clones the drive from one RAID to another RAID.
Slow and bulky and not really a backup solution.
The backup drives are two NAS Synology which come with the Time Machine serves which we have considered except there is no way to adjust scheduling and there is no notification per email incase something goes wrong or backup has been successful.
We do like how it puts files in to a dated folder structure. In case we need to back to previous date.
What other solution do yo have or know?
Big thanks

Do you need versioning? Snapshots of your timelines is one way to do that, and it's built right into FCPX.
Do you need daily backups, hourly backups, and snapshots of your whole drive structure? That can get pretty complicated and expensive very quickly.
Do you need offsite backups? How quick do you need to access your full backups and snapshot backups?
I use Carbon Copy Cloner on a daily backup, just for my own sanity backup, in case a raid or a drive fails. I don't do versioning other than using snapshots. I don't need to do offsite backups, but that's a cost vs need decision.
Can you clarify your needs?

You might consider :
timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
It is very useful and simple software...
We have been using this for years and it is reliable

I manage only file based media these days.
The camera files I backup to LTO 4 via BRU PE edition www.tolisgroup.com/bru-pe-archival-and-c...rables-software.html . This is the only really safe long term storage of any form of data. And LTO via Bru PE is an extremely secure way to have excess to your files for a very long time as its the industry standard for large scale operations. No worry the software will not get updated one day.
I backup the FCP libraries via npassociatesllc.com/backupsforfcp/ onto a drive which I backup via time machine. So even if I do not backup my Raid 0 media drives with the FCP libraries directly I have backups for media and FCP libraries with this combination. backups for FCPx does timed (user defined) backups every hour automatically. And it does a date stamped backup like time machine which means you can go back in time to find the version you need.
Once I finish a project I might do a further backup of the FCP library including media to LTO. Bru Pe can read the FCP library and automatically gathers all media regardless on which drive, or wether managed or not managed inside the FCP library.
About once a month I make a copy via CCC of the system drive and any drive containing crucial data like the Backups for FCPx files onto one external hard drive which I store in a different physical location (I actually keep the LTO cartridges in a different location too). I override these backups with the current state the next month.
Again if you want to store anything (not FCP related) for the next generation use the LTO drive.
LTO is not cheap initially but I'm working with the one LTO drive (Hp) I bought 7 years ago without problem.
Hope this help or gives some ideas.

The backup would be for the companies RAID not just for video projects.
From A to Documents to Z.
So every document would need to be backed up on a daily bases schedule would optimal.
Also we would like a backup of each file by date so if something goes wrong we could go back into time.

I don't think this will work with the built in Time Machine serves inside NAS Sinology?

I still believe the only real backup solution is LTO. BRU PE as a software can also do incremental backups for a defined set of data. You can start separate sets of cartridges per defined data set (say per project and all related data)
This way you can have a full history of a 'project'. Never run out of space for backups (buy new cartridges) and can safely delete anything from your working raid once it is on the backup.
I'm not saying this is the only way but I strongly believe it is the only safe way.
Only my 2 cents and I don't want to be patronising but 'am just parranoid about data safety

cofe wrote: It sounds like you're just looking for software that works like time machine to backup your raid(s) to a secondary raid creating a one to one copy. I see 2 problems here: you eventually want to offload data of your working raid because a job finishes and you need the space again. How do you manage the backups after the original is gone in case a client comes back 6 month later and wants changes to a project? Secondly your backup raid will fill up with keeping all the version of your files which at one point will make it necessary to delete the oldest versions or to offload the archives to somewhere else and loose the history of a given set of data because the software would need to know that at a certain date the backup drive changed.

LTO is a solution that we have. Projects that are older then 1 year will be put to tape and stored in a vault.
But for a daily basis we need a better solution... something that goes back a few day incase a file get overwritten or .....

Thank you for another Software solution. I was also looking at Retrospect but they seem to have some bad reviews.
