Alt App for Photos?

I'm looking at a new app called Emulsion. It is a photo cataloging and correction app, which accepts Aperture plug-ins. So I get to keep the use of all that stuff I bought for Aperture. It also allows for custom presets. I like the look and features over Apple's Photos app. I was hoping third party developers would start developing plug-ins for Photos, but there seems to be no interest in that, at this time.

So, Emulsion looks very promising. No reviews on the App Store, it is pretty new. But the web site shows some nice things that make is attractive to me, personally.

What other alternatives are there to Photos (that aren't Lightroom?

Part of the reason we haven't seen much on the Extensions end of Photos is it's only been a couple of months since Apple released the first beta version of the app for OS X with the capability capability to utilize extensions ... not to mention if the SDK has been offered yet.

It takes a bit of time for developers to offer such solutions ... they have to have the tools in-hand first. Maybe once El Capitan is closer to official release, we may see more movement in this area.

That said, I've been keeping an eye on Emulsion as well. I don't think it is up to par with what I can do with Lr ... and I would really love to say good-bye to all Adobe software if I could.

Hopefully, before too long, there will be a viable replacement for Aperture.

I've not seen any "interest" from third parties in Photos. I know it is early for actual products, but no one has expressed interest in developing for it. Plus the white background is horrid for photo work. Totally defies the reason for dark gray work spaces when color grading.

But, we do have at least one brand new contender with Emulsion, and hopefully it will be the Pixelmator of Aperture/Lightroom. Personally, I've no need for Lightroom.

So, back to my OP, what other options do we have out there? Any one have their eyes on anything else?

Not according what I have read straight from the folks at both On1 and Topaz Labs ... they both said via comments in interviews and comments on their support forums, they would love to develop for Photos ... said they found the the process of extensions, rather than plugins, to be intriguing ... only there was nothing to develop for until very recently ...

Developers can't really have much interest until they see the conditions and environment they are developing for. This is a major undertaking and a departure from the traditional plugin paradigm ... not going to happen overnight.

I'm not sure the developers mentioned will definitely offer solutions for Photos ... but they do deserve some time to analyze the situation a bit before they dive in.

NOW we have the start of a dialog going. Commenting on your own forum is not public information. Post it somewhere the rest of us will know about it. That is great info, Butch. Thanks. Maybe swear them here to make a public comment?

A survey of potential Photos extension developers would be great to do about now. Apple always sucked at that, but for someone like FCP.co to do it, that'd be great.

Anyone else know other alt apps, or potential Photos third party developers?

I just noticed on Twitter that the app KeyFlow Pro is a DAM that works with FCPX. It is available on the App Store and cost $300.

DAM is nice, and that looks nice, but not the same thing as Aperture or Lightroom. No "photo" correction tools.

I happened to stumble across this app again ... PhotoDirector ... I had trialed v3 or 4 some time back but was very happy with Aperture at the time and summarily forgot about it ... then I saw it come up in a related search today and thought I would share for posterity.

I don't have any affiliation with the app other than a curiosity of it's potential. Looks to have become a more full option than previous versions ... and seems to be moderately priced as well ...

One thing they're all missing, integration with Apple pro apps. But I guess that's the tradeoff going third party, FCPX, Motion, they won't read a third party library.

Yes, none of the third party options allow direct access to images ... but at least Lightroom, with it's Publish capability, it's quite easy to keep a folder of images at the ready that can be easily accessed by FCP X.
