Is NIKON a taboo word around here? was created by pszilard
Couldn't help noticing that there is plenty of stuff for Canon DSLR, including a dedicated forum, BUT not so for poor old Nikon!
Why so?
Does Canon sponsor this site and makes it a condition to not have Nikon presence???
I shoot with a Nikon D750, and think it is excellent, and would love to see some discussion around it. E.g. what LUT to use with Nikon FL color profile, when recorded on a Ninja Blade in Apple ProRes 422?

Of course not. Maybe more people use video on canon DSLRs than Nikons

There's a dedicated forum to Canon DSLR's? I didn't notice that. Where is it?

I have Nikons. Lots of glass over decades of Photography.
I have to say IMHO that shooting video with Nikons is not great. I do it for the interchangeable lenses, but only for certain shots and it is difficult to set up. Lots of issues. Really wish Nikon would step up.
Canon is better at it and now that other manufactures are embracing video on DSLRs we are seeing some wonderful improvements. I would love to be able to pick up say a Sony A7, a GH4 and others but glass+camera = $$$$ so I will continue to use my Nikon from time to time.
Maybe a dedicated topic for agnostic DSLR video. Peter, what do you think? As always, thanks for a great site.
Just my wooden nickels worth, Greg

Have you ever experimented with another brand of DSLR, using an adapter to use your Nikon glass with? I use my Canon glass with my BMD pocket cinema camera (micro 4/3) on occasion. Not a bad solution on a budget. I have Micro 4/3 glass, too, but I have lots of Canon lenses from over the years. Just an option to consider. Has its pros and cons.

Some people are using Nikons and of course they are great. There's no much difference with the Canons anymore.
The reason why little people are using them is historical: Canon released the 5D and changed the market, it took about 2 years for Nikon to catch up.
That was too late. Now Canon DSLRs are engrained in people's minds.

Sure thing. I get that. But Nikon is not exactly a no-name brand, so would you as administrator, create a DSLR/NIKON forum? I would love you to do that...
It would be interesting how much use it will get, and the great thing with digital web content is that it doesn't "cost" to just set up another forum.
By the way, I love this site and my thanks to all who make it happen!

I thought
this
was it. Perhaps it is just articles, in which case my bad.
However, perhaps it would be a good idea to have hardware brand related sub forums? That would help people with h/w realated questions and answers. What do you guys think?

Not to pile on Nikon, but if you think about it, video for them is definitely an afterthought. Nikon has really never played in the (pro) video space, do not build professional video equipment or have a motion picture DNA. Nikon's forays into film/video have been spotty at best.
Canon, on the other hand, has many years in motion picture tech under their belts, so even though the 5D Mk II's video popularity caught them by surprise, they had the video engineering people to capitalize on it and expand it into the Cinema EOS line as well as their other video offerings. Not to mention that they also make cinema lenses, for example.

Hey guys, I didn't intend this thread to be about the pro's and con's of Nikon versus Canon. I am not disagreeing with what people are saying, but surely that is a different topic, probably discussed to extreme elsewhere.
All I was saying and suggesting that it would be nice to have a Nikon oriented place, where people that DO happen to chose Nikon, can easily exchange tips and tricks, which are relevant to their gear. Especially as it is a minority.
With regards to video suitability, I personally disagree about Nikon being 2nd class. Just use Google to see what can be done with D800, D810, D4(s) and the D750. Not to mention the D7200. But like I said this should not be a "pissing contest"!
I am not trying to justify using Nikon and I respect all videographers irrespective of what gear they use.
Go shoot something!

and the small-budget guy utilizes an eBayed Sony Nex 5 (240€) plus an adapter from Hongkong (8€) and Canon glasses from garage-sales and flea markets, you get older NF for 20-50€! … ok, no autofocus, and no 'prime' apertures (no f-stops), no point'n shoot device.
The tiny Sony has an APSC-sized sensor, same as the Canon T models. By lacking the mirror, the body is really small.
And I use it for filming… f1.4 + APSC = shallow focus excess :silly:

back2topic, sorry pszilard!!
What do you expect from such a board here?* For handling&trouble shooting your Nikon, there are better, specialist boards, This board is specialized on FCPX,
I can't imagine, a Nikon/Canon/Panasonic/Sony board has an exclusive FCPX sub-board… you know, what I mean?
And when we want to talk about cameras, this Off Topic area isn't bad,… don't you think?
* On re-reading: This question sounds harsh - no offense meant! lack of English skills,

Thanks to all respondents. It is true that this is an FCP forum, not a h/w forum, by an large. I use FCPX and find this place a gold mine of information and friendly support/interaction, which is why I use this as a spring board for all my video based questions and research, of which there are many as I am new to all this.
So apologies if it was out of place.

I have also a Fuji X-T1 system, which includes a Nikon adaptor. I like the Fuji color rendition, but other than that, I find no benefit to using it in preference to my D750. After attaching a battery grip, the X-T1 is the same size as the FF Nikon, but it has less features, so I rarely bother, especially not with Nikon glass. Nikon lenses are all FF, so size on the Fuji seems too large.
