I'm looking into finally doing a website. I feel soooo ignorant. Where to go what to get? It will be hosting my film site and my wifes photography business as well. We looked up top 10 web hosting places and then turned off by the whole web jargon and such. Maybe i should just try to get someone to build but would adsume thats expensive.

Who is your local ISP? Go with them...

As for a web site, good luck, web developers, and they're so called help, are totally useless....

The wife built one with templates years back but we let it go as business declined back where we used to live. They just seemed so generic looking though. Same with the templates we looked at tonight. Obviously we are creatives ourselves but when it comes to the web stuff. I just feel stimied.

For the classes I'm teaching = job is business, websites are 'mine', I'm using two free (!) services:
sites.google.com
jimdo.com

Both offer 'website by LEGO', in terms of: you can use all sorts of ready-mades, to customize your site to your needs a and looks. You can do a lot of stuff, although "no circle shapes with square blocks" ;)

sites.google is part of your google-account, so highly integrated into that. But: you'll notice, it's a 'hobby', the usage is a bit weird, frequently used features are dig 4-clicks-deep, others top level. Advantage: fire&forget - some of my sites a years old, never touched again - still online.

jimdo is from-the-ground concepted as a template-based website service; much more consistent UI etc compared to sites.google. It offer some features, google misses, pw-protected areas, 'adoption' to phone layouts etc .... Every 4-6, months you get a reminder to stay busy with your site, or it gets erased (after 1 year??) = add/erase a dot to your site and your done. Plus, lots of ads you should 'upgrade' = purchase the 'better' services jimdo offers.

A few of my scholars bought a domain-name, and via cloaking/framing host their sites on one of those services.

... yep, that is no professional "I code sites in TextEdit!!"-approach … :woohoo:
but - a) by customizing you get a site of your own, b) why wasting time in learning website-progarmming when you have so lil' time for making movies? :silly:
