I'm sure someone will point out that this is nothing new, but we're noticing it a lot lately. Perhaps the technology to perform it so cleanly has arrived recently.
You'll see it in the intro title sequence for True Detective.
Basically your human figure is the frame which contains another video, yet our outline doesn't lose all their detail, especially in key places.
I'm guessing the subject to be the frame is shot against a green screen, but hoping someone here can offer tips on how to do this trick. It looks great.
This Vimeo StaffPick music video has perfect examples of this technique with ideal footage chosen to be contained by our heroes.
Enjoy

Hmmm. Maybe they're projecting the video on the people.

I have a video tutorial I did for ArtBeats about this exact technique some time ago. Basically using a green screen keyed clip as the source for an animated shape mask. Very super easy to do in Motion.
www.artbeats.com/video_tutorials/52
The only difference is that they're adding the people in a top layer, above the keyed effect, and pulling down opacity and playing with blend modes.
It actually is much easier to do than you may think.

Fantastic Tutorial Ben, really appreciate you taking the time to share it with us.
Like you said, the effect is surprisingly easy.
We can even do Bond Movie intros too.
Was kind of hoping to get a little tint on that white cloud emitter, but still loved the lesson.
Also, we finally get to hear what you sound like... impressive all around.
Hope you don't mind, I tweeted about it, so they might experience a little extra traffic over at ArtBeats
Thanks again

Thank you
And folks should get creative. Use generators or animations as mask shape sources. Static shapes as image mask sources is just so, well, blah... LOL

Hi Ben,
I've been searching for something like the True Detective effect and yours isn't quite it, lacking the 3d aspect of the human figure distorting the layer on top.
Some have said that it's bump mapping that will do this. ?
Here is someone doing it in After Effects:
Any way to do this in Motion 5?
I'm basically looking to have one FCPX clip distort another, as in a human face appear as if it's pushing out from behind another clip like sky or water, etc. so you only see the face shape and not the face image itself protruding.
I'm new to Motion, so any help would be great. Thanks!

Sure, place a layer of the person keyed out on top, lower their opacity. And then use it as a source for the Bump Map filter, also. Should be easy enough to do.
"... lacking the 3d aspect of the human figure..."
Well, the human figure in video is not a 3D object, it is 2D, bump map is the only way to get that.

can I create a generator or effect to do this in fcpx, or do i have to import the specific clips into motion, tweak and then back to fcpx?

bump map fx layer goes over keyed top layer or bottom layer?
so far either option doesn't look 'bumpy' just looks like a simple opacity thing.
perhaps you can explain or direct me to a tutorial on bump mapping.
thanks!!

Bump Map uses a "source", it is not something you put over or under. Is done in Motion. I've never tried to publish the Bump Map's source-well. Would be interesting to try.
