Possible Major University Athletics Video Job was created by Don Rumsey
So I am in the running to be the video coordinator for one of the sports teams at a major university. My biggest biggest opportunity yet!
As excited as I am it is technically part time and no benefits. I have a family of four to worry about. The pay? Ohhhh the pay. I am told that it is $11/hr! Now i only work very very very part time at the job I have. Maybe one or two hours a day some time. However it is almost twice the amount an hour and with full out benefits, pension, 401, etc. However..i could make more money at less pay with more hours at the new jobs nd doing something I absolutely love to do.
Anywho... I would be traveling 45 minutes to get there. I would be working 3pm to 11pm. Filming every practice, then working with the footage in Sporttech software, which looks easy enough. Travelling, (flying), with the team EVERYWHERE around the country. Along with the technical videos to be made am fully expected to chronicle the teams year and to make promo films, highlight reels, you name it. Also i am the boss and will have one probably two assistants. Will have June, July, and August off.
All sounds GREAT!!! I'm just trying to wrap my head around the pay issue. $11 for all of that. Mind you this is a Div 1 school. It's not like they are hurting for cash. No benefits??? Ok. I guess this is the possible way of the future.
I was told all of this on the phone today. One of the assistant coaches was calling prospective hires of these details. Stating that they have had a few people decline the position with this knowledge. Looking at the positives I see it as a big foot in the door that could lead to very big things....but $11/hr?????
Discuss.....

Find out ASAP, if not sooner, if travel days are counted, and how you will be paid? Travel is taking time away from you, when you could be doing other paid work, so they need to cover that.
I understand from this, they are treating you very much as a full time freelancer, every practice, every game, hell something smells fishy...If you are to cover everything, 100% of the time, then this is not a job for a freelancers, they are looking to not pay the legal benefits.
We have the very same system here, and it sucks, we are responsible for all living legal expenses, which is not legally correct, but we have no way to fight this, accept or we hire someone else..
It is a form of slavery...Be very wary...Again, everything should be full time...if not why hire freelancer???

I teach at a university, part-time. I've taught at and consulted for many across the US. None of them pay worth a crap.

I'm thinking because of what sport it is. Lacrosse, and that they are a new program to the school officially. However they have one of the top coachs ever I guess and Asst. They spent a ton of money so far in building new locker rooms that look better than my home, whiz bang computer software and everything else. Willing to have me fly along with the team yet only $11/hr for what is supposed to be such an important thing to them. Also no benefits...so I hope the plane dont go down or I take a stick to the head.

Even if the sport is new, the department is old and well established, you have to question why have other refused the job. Ask yourself, is $11 an hour enough, consider the hours, what I would do is ask for a full year schedule, proposed hours of work, not just some dates, they need to be professional, they are hiring a professional, the department needs to respect that.
What scope is there for you to take on other clients, are are they wanting you on duty all the time? You need to think about the long term, it sounds on the surface a wonderful gig, before signing on the dotted line, understand every single aspect of the requirements of the job...
Check out other sites, maybe $11 is a tight stiff, I am not in the USA, from what I have heard $11 is low for a professional rate.

Not living only in a diff- time-zone, but a diff. society, hard to commend on that ...
A 9-5-job + 11$/h would mean ~1.800 a month.
Minus what?
tax, medicare, retirement reserve, insurances, house…
means what at the end of the month?
Doing something 'you love' means extra-hours. Unpaid.
Because you can not finish that way. It has to be better. And better. And maybe… different... And let's try.... And for sure on weekends. At night. On xmas eve....
From my perspective, this is a huge opportunity for some young person, solo, to get a food in the door. But, for heavens sake, how do you feed a family of 4 with just 11$/h??? Is living that cheap in your area? Calculate how much alone gas you burn each month just too get home...
Excellent opportunity - but not for Daddy....
my 5¢ ....

First and foremost thanks all for the replies. Some good thoughts here that i actually brought up on a phone call with them today. I was called by the hiring/firing lady today to set up a phone interview for Monday. (Which I felt is kind of funny...you have me on the phone now...lets interview shale we!) Anywho I brought up the money issue. Told her for all of the things they are wanting it would greatly tax not just me but any individual. That if they wanted an actual "professional" such as me that the pay should be commensurate. That they being such a large and popular school that they should want to pay out as well. Also that I have a family and that as much as I would love to have this position, and my family wanting me to have this position....that I would ultimately have to decline. She was extremely apathetic to my position and was very appreciative of my honesty and seemed to genuinely care.
With that info she stated that she would still like to have the interview with me on Monday and that after the interview she would take these concerns to the coaching staff and the other powers that be and see what could be done. If I make it past the next step. Great words from her... However i could imagine her getting off the phone and saying forget this guy!
