OptiBay SSD upgrade question

Hi all,
I'm looking for ways to increase performance on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. My RAM's maxed out at 8gb, and my HDD is upgraded to a 7,200rpm 720gb.
The one thing left would be swapping my SuperDrive out for an SSD, using an OptiBay (or similar SuperDrive caddy).
I figure I'd probably opt for a 128gb SSD, as I'd use it solely for the OS and apps/library etc. All files and assets would remain on my 720gb HDD. I'm hoping that having OSX and my apps running off the SSD, whilst referencing files from the separate HDD, will speed things up somewhat. I'd like to see a bit of a bump in FCPX, specifically.

My question is - has anyone done this before? And if so, did you see any decent increases in speed and performance?

Huge thanks for any info/tips/advice/stories/general chit-chat :)
