Wow!
Thanks for sharing this, what a masterpiece.
Now I want to see the film.

It's an exciting time for movies, amazing achievements are possible.
We usually think of CGI as being StarWars style light sabers, who suspects the water next to the dock?
These days, you just don't know what's real...

Fell in love with the song too ('Young and Beautiful' by Lana Del Rey)

It is great, great comparison, great work.

That being said, I also hope they keep making sets as nice as they are, because I still think that a lot of performances of actors are better when they are not in front of a green screen the whole time.

Spielberg also once said he preferred real big sets, as much as possible, because it gave him much more ideas then just being on a green screen studio. He did make Tintin though, and that wasn't bad, but I still 'get' what he says.

Not knocking on CGI in general, just hoping that they still keep alive the great art of set-building. I do think that also can be rewarded in the final movie.

In this case it's interesting that the sets are half & half, some CGI & some fabricated. Of course part of the magic here (as I mentioned earlier) is that the CGI is not what we would normally associate with computer generated sets. Big old buildings rather than spaceships & exploding planets.

My principle appreciation for this piece is described in the vimeo poster's description, since he obtained special permission to share non-completed components of the film it's a rare treat. Ultimately, I think it raises interest in the film, so a wise marketing decision that hopefully other studios will follow.

We went to see Gatsby the other night & must add something here. Even though it seems like this is the year to dump on Hollywood, with multiple articles reporting the film industry has lost its way & box offices are down. Perhaps those cumes are more related to economic downturns than significant film trends. Though it is a bit disheartening to see the divide between critics & viewing public continuing to widen.

In this case, Gatsby on RottenTomatoes scores a 49% rotten to 51% fresh among critics, while 70% of the public liked it. Most of the disparagement comes from comparisons to the novel.

Well, isn't that always the case? Condescending readers snootily downplay film as if it were some vulgar attempt at art which could never measure up to literature.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the film immensely. Since we've had a glimpse behind the scenes at how some of the CGI was accomplished, it was a real thrill to be immersed in it during the story. The visuals are stunning! The blending with real actors, seamless. Certain scenes are visualized in such a fresh creative way, you will find it a sumptuous feast for the imagination. Contemplating how specific effects were achieved may leave you pondering late into the night. The acting is also excellent. Gatsby's well worth watching, on many levels.
