Final Cut Pro X and Camera Meta Data? was created by finalbug.net
I have a dream and that is to be able to access Camera Meta Data. Specifically both Geo Location and time. That is time and not timecode! Is any body in here doing this? And if so are you getting this to work with FCP X and a commercial camera?
When I right mouse clicks on any material I have in my Event Browser it is not throwing up Geo Location or Time. (Lumix GH2 and mobile phones!)
My guess is that the information is not there in the first place...
What camera would be best suited for this task?
Can I access this data in FCP X?
I was looking at the specifications for the Lumix GH3 and there does seem to be a way if you have WiFi and another device but…
Like lets say I am in the Sarah desert for example I am not likely to have WiFi. I might just be able to fall back on GPS???
Would be grateful for any input…
best

Creation date is metadata you have access to. Geo Location would be dependent on the camera being able to write that metadata, but it is done in some higher end cameras, and with some add-on products for others. But if the camera doesn't record it, it is not there.
Can FCP X read and display it? You bet! Go to the Metadata Views editing window (Action menu bottom of Info window, Edit Metadata View), you'll see Longitude and Latitude are there for both stills and videos, as well as GPS Version.
Do they work correctly? No. I have been interested in this same subject, and have been testing with video and photos from my iPhone, which does in fact record this metadata. FCP X still seems to not be able to show this type of metadata properly.

Thanks Ben for that detailed response. Forgot completely about that little menu!
So for the sake of clarity.
If I had a camera or device with Geo location functionality and it was set up correctly it would show up in the Meta Data Edit window?
What issues did you run into?
I am thinking of a "making of situation"
Teams making films being filmed, if you get my drift...
Sort according to timecode and location :woohoo:

The iPhone records GPS data, but it doesn't show up in FCP X.
Don't know any more than that.

Thanks Ben. Well if iPhone GPS Meta data does not show up… Wow. I guess that I will have to send this as a feature request to Apple. It seems like such a no brainer to me. I always think of my nut documentary a couple of years back with the nut gathers in the Jungle. It was a nightmare finding them…
