No.
It has nothing to do with the river 'Rhein', but with purity = 'Reinheit'.
Reinheitsgebot ....

And speaking of German history:
I'm born late 50ies, if you would had asked me mid 80ies about a re-union with the east (GDR), I would NEVER imagined that!
it started with a few people just walking ... every Monday .
So, to say 'Change is impossible, 'cause it's The System' is apathy. Indeed.

I'm living here, but born in Hamburg - so, all that Bavarian stuff is 'kiddies soda'!! :woohoo:
My real probs with government and laws areactually more things like GEZ, GEMA and tomorrow LEISTUNGSSCHUTZRECHT. (non-native Germans: speak out loud, 5x!, it sounds as silly as it is!)

I am also refraining from eating any Pies for the next 2 & 1/2 weeks. Naturally this will also end in time for Paddy's day because not having a Beef & Guinness Pie would be wrong.
I do hope you will all join me in this protest.

Never once did I say anything was "impossible," nor that "it is that it is."
Rather, I took a page from the Art of War, suggesting it was more prudent to utilize the amazing new avenues & opportunities that exist to empower people to break into this industry & effect change without the futile attempt of taking on the giant, head on.
The greatest battles have been won this way, while those refusing to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Unions can be a form of protection for workers, ideally & on paper. However, when this discussion began we were talking about big film companies in the West outsourcing work to emerging markets where they can get the labor dirt cheap. Yes, I agree the formation of unions in India & other lower income markets could be a great way to help protect labor. Though, having traveled to 3rd world countries, its been my experience that bribes, grafts, corruption, etc, are often commonplace, usually keeping the funds from the poorest workers.
This is not to say, "it's impossible" or abandon the concept, but merely to balance our idealistic optimism with some pragmatic realism.
With that in mind, I think there are a lot of exciting new opportunities to take on the big boys in their own sector.
Ultimately the struggle surrounds our hope of creative genius eventually emerging over brutal competition.

It really rings true for me.
And Ben thanks for the link to vfxg.org
All very sober.
I am reading a book at the moment called The 80/20 principle.
www.amazon.com/The-80-20-Principle-Achieving/dp/0385491743
It really is making me rethink my whole life.
Basically you can break it down very simply by saying...
If you have 100 products.
You earn 80% of your profit with 20 of them.
This works the other way around.
From 80% of your products you earn 20% of your profit.
OK that is the version for idiots.
It is obviously more complex than that and I am only on page 47
I haven´t even read 20% of it
I do not know much about the program Excel.
But a friend of mine told me in a bar once that “Excel” is all about tipping points.
I guess that I need to go for a drink with him again and ask how tipping points relate to Fulcrums.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulcrum
Or are we maybe the Fulcrum?
It is a pity that I am boycotting the film.
And the same bar friend mentioned above was a room mate of the Gentleman who wrote Pi and he called this guy a really nasty word beginning with a C.
So buying the book is also not going to work!
I might have to join a public library again...
Speaking of bars and such any one for Wild Boar washed down with something like this?
beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/263/727
“A thick creamy head subsides to a bubbly, heavy laced film.”
Like what the hell is a laced film?

Maybe everything's going to work out after all?
Oops, I spoke too soon. Another article just came out, citing the aggressive stance of the flailing company's creditors objecting to R&H's management & business acumen, therefore they seek to halt any ongoing operations.

11 Hours later I get sent this, the court has overruled the objections by the angry investors & OK'd the involvement of Korean money... (still developing)

As more information on this story became available, it turns out it wasn't such a simple case after all. Here The Hollywood Reporter examines why big FX houses can actually lose money on major features.
Just as a side note, Life of Pi will surpass 600 million this weekend.

As you can see above this, I've been following the continual unfolding or developing revelations as they pertain to this particular firm. It does appear, as first suspected, to have far more to do with one company's tribulations rather than an example of what is indicative in the entire FX industry.
Here's today's update.

Unfortunately I for one do not have the brain capacity to follow this in depth at the moment. I am sure that it is all rather complex etc.
Going back to the very first post in this thread.
Shit smells like shit, smells like shit.
It is an unavoidable truth.
I do not believe that any one is denying that here?
As an old school teacher of mine used to say…
"Two wrongs do not make a right."
So the Efx company cut corners were also crooked what ever.
But the whole underbidding no matter what the bottom line is strategy is also a very earthy spiral to nowhere. And I am talking about the 6 feet under earth here
It takes two too Tango.
I guess that no one will deny that either?
Forgive me for one of my tangents here…
I have lost 2 hard drives from 2 laptops in the space of 3 months.
Until now I have had luck. Never lost a hard drive in 10 years and I must have 50 of them so that is a record right there.
After I lost the first one I bought myself a surge protector as I am in a new flat with weird electricity issues.
So I invested money that I do not really have in a surge protector and still lost a second drive.
You could say that was a waste of time and money but I am tiny bit wiser.
If I had not taken this step….
I would be kicking myself saying shit I should not have been such a tight A**hole and spent the money and saved a drive.
This way I spent the money, lost my second drive in 3 months and am thinking maybe it is not the electricity.
Maybe it is hair from the cat, alignment of the moon or the pixie dust from the free FCP plugin or whatever!!!
Back on topic.
I for one am staying green until after St Patricks day which is on the 17th.
One of the interesting things about St Patrick is he did the rounds and converted the kings and then the sheep followed. He was a clever guy.
I posted in numerous forums and one thing that I observed was that in forums where the players were lets say a little bit bigger, people were more sympathetic to the green cause. Just my subjective observation.
I have my serge protector and maybe if the weird electrical issues raise there head again I might actually save drives. As I write this I have four drives connected to my computer all connected to my surge protector.
There is a little old lady in my street. She has a bag. On the bag is written "Accept the Mystery"
I will never know but I did the best that I could with the knowledge and resources available to me.
This helps me to get asleep at night.
Waking up too early is another topic for another forum
