Not sure I described my "problem" correctly.

I have used soundtracks and some more in my movie with a lot of kids.
Because of the kids I can´t share with either you or internet. Want to, but I really can´t. It´s not for me to decide.

What does the rules say?
If I don´t have royalty free music, what limitations is there?

If I somehow got permission to show it to you and net, how do I pay the artists or producers(or whoever I need to pay - or ask permission) to be allowed to use their music?

You'd have to contact whoever you purchased the music from. Different situations will require different methods.

If you have purchased royalty free music then you can use it as per the 'contract' that would have come with it.

You can't just use regular music that you have bought from artists, like CD's and Mp3's - purchasing the music only entitles you to listen to it (not use it or modify it).

However there are lots of Royalty Free music sites where you can purchase different tracks with different licenses (for personal use or personal internet use will be less expensive than for commercial TV use for instance).

I see a lot of self made movies and footages on Youtube with regualar music. Is this legal?

So what you are saying, I can´t even put the music I buy into FCP when making movies, even if it is just for family and friends?

You can't use your regular music that you bought in your videos as you don't own the copyright. YouTube gets around this by recognizing the music and offering ad revenue to the copyright holder. So you will never really be able to monatize your videos, won't be able to submit them to festivals, and your video will always be compromised.
Better to get into the habit of using legal royalty free music from day 1.

If it is for family and friends, that you're just sharing privately with, you're OK.

If you make it public in any way, it is illegal.

Pretty simple.

If you want to use copyrighted material, you need to go through the music publisher or a service such as Music Supervisor .

All true Ben. However, I have done stuff for family and friends, and they have a habit of posting it to Facebook, youtube, vimeo etc. So if you do it right first time it doesn't matter what becomes of it down the road. Likewise, it can be submitted to a festival (if its really good) and so on, without any need for reediting.

Consider the video I posted earlier, of the guy in the Seychelles. Technically it was a family holiday abroad; but the result was so good he posted it to vimeo and it is one the guys biggest hits. Given that music often dictates the tone of an edit, or even the pace, if he had cut that to a piece of popular music for his own families pleasure, then he would have had a hard time reediting it for general release when he realized how good it was.

Just saying its good to get in the habit of doing things legally, because you never know where they might end up.

Thank you!

Haven´t thought much about wether it´s illegal when sharing with friends and family, but now I do. And thats why I want to make my own music - which is hard enough!
