Just for fun, is interesting to see.
My 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 3.2GHz machine, clips on secondary internal SATA drive, this video show measuring CPU usage during playback. Imagine FCP X with a Red Rocket card...

HHmm... Plays find on our 4 Macs here. Odd...
Maybe right-click the link and download it. I tried to embed it but the site won't do it.

that is interesting-
I've never noticed my processors being taxed when I play back 1080 footage.

There is no 1080, it's ProRes 720 compared to 4K. That's a 4096x3204 RED R3D clip playing native in FCP X. 1080 clips average about the same as 720 on my CPUs, which is not much at all.

yep Ben. I saw that 720 footage. I just never noticed my CPUs displaying much, if any, usage playing HD footage.
I'm running a 2x 2.4 quad_core intel xeon with 32 megs of RAM Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB. If you're wondering.
Can't check now because I'm rendering ProRes in 5D to RGB in the background right now.

I've always seen HD push my CPUs up around 10-20% each. That's nothing for an 8-core. That's not even blinking its eyes. Point is how much it pushes native REDCOD RAW 4K clips.
Being a 2008 model, these are Intel Xeon processors. Not the quickest in the world.
