Bike camera mount solutions

I need to put a pilot together, late winter/early spring, and I’m looking into ways to mount my iPhone 5 to my mountain bike for shooting video, both while riding and while at rest. Currently i’m considering “The Gif”...

www.idownloadblog.com/2012/11/23/glif-for-iphone-5/

...as an adapter in combination with a camera bike mount. So far I cant find if there’s a better solution that doesn’t need the adapter so I haven't yet looked much further into the mount.

If anyone has any experience with anything that may be suitable I’m looking for related recommendations or information. Even if you haven't got experience but know of anything I could research further it would be great.

If everything goes to plan I’ll later be looking into similar solutions but with higher quality video, so while it is secondary at the moment that info would would also be greatly appreciated.

Edit:

I forgot to add, I am concerned about "The Glif" as while I wont be doing any of that mental high pace downhill stuff we all see on you tube, it will be used off road and at a reasonably pace.

Looks like a brilliant product, simple effective design. Their video is excellent & what a relief to see it's not made in China.

Your concerns are allayed near the end of the video by their accessory "ligature" which naturally looks like a little musical note, yet locks your iPhone securely for specifically off road riding, or worse.

Loved the balloon scene.

Normally I'm one for do it yourself types of hobby jobs, I've made a stedicam & a jib, but no do it yourselfer is going to produce anything so simple, elegant & functional as this device. The number of creative ways you can use this is astounding & the price makes it an easy choice for me.

Glif... go for it.

(I'm currently in the process of obtaining materials to build a multipurpose rig from my Canon DSLR. I'll probably post a video later. Picked up some great supplies yesterday which open up a lot of versatile possibilities.)

Thanks Tan,

Just to add, it's not a missive budget pilot but "The Glif", and checking out out alternatives, is pennies in comparison. I can only find iPhone 4/4s gGifs on Uk websites so if anyone can offer a Uk source (for the iPhone 5 version) in the next week or so I'll buy one, test it, and review it. Otherwise I'll order overseas, wait till it gets here, and review it anyway when it comes.

I'm still very open to alternatives of course, with which I may well do the same.

I've ordered stuff from US companies while in Europe & found their products & way of doing business superior to that of most Europeans. I just love their whole business attitude. Most of them ship by FedX, UPS or similar, another great business model the yanks invented. The French or Italians would never come up with an idea like that. "You want the thing when? Aaay, you must be crazy!!!"

or .. "Oh yes, ze thing she disappeared in ze mail... ehh... we don't know what happened... eet is to be expected ... theese kind of thing ... it ehh... just appens... you know."

BTW - You may find this trailer, if you'll pardon the pun, right up your alley...

Thanks Tan, I hadn't noticed you'd posted that clip when you did, just seeing it now.

Sadly I've just discovered that any testing has to be put off for the moment. A wee slip on the ice and an operation to get pins on my ankles in the morning is to blame.

Ouch!

Well... you young fellas & your dangerous stunts.
Heal up nicely, we'll wait.

In the mean time, why not watch the movie from the trailer clip - Premium Rush?
It's very exciting, has some very original effects, & is full of bike stunts.

During the closing credits, they show how the lead actor was injured during production.

Get well soon...

Blessings

J

Thanks, I'll be fine in no time, and it won't stop me from working. Not at 39 years young.

I had actually started to worry about rolling shutter possibilities on the iPhone, but the cost is buttons to test it, and was thinking to about a GoPro. Who knows I may use it again one day. Mounting on the bike would be essential as a makeshift middle of nowhere dolly, but maybe combined with helmet shots on the move might be better. Or even both.

I got surgery last night, and when they opened it up it turned out to be worse than I thought, not so much they. So now I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it, time will tell, I have till the start fo the year to assess healing.

They let me take a photo of my ankle at the hospital, but I'll spare everyone the horror of posting it. It's rank.

Edit:

I almost forgot Ben, your only as old as the woman you feel.

The women I feel? Which one? HA!

Heal up quickly, Noco!

I consulted for a hospital once (local, nationally famous) and helped them work out the rigs for shooting surgeries. I don't do well with blood, but after a couple I got used to it. That was a very long time ago. Since then, my weakness with blood has returned. So thanks for not posting that photo.

On the bright side, you have an excuse to make folks wait on your every need through the holidays!

I'm a bit gutted as this project was right up my street, but it's a no go.

I thought the Glif looked like it could be a useful little gizmo so I ordered one anyway and it appeared today. I can recommend it as a general mount, but wouldn't consider using it while riding a bike.

If anyone considers getting one the iPhone 5 needs to be completely bare, I had to rip off my screen protector to use it.

sorry to read about the ankle:(
I have a glif, it's excellent and the age old useful rubber band(s) helped to keep everything where it should be on the shoot
