While seeking to learn more about the technical side of film making, I asked a question here a few weeks back about special effects. Some of our resident tech gurus advised me to look into the free open source program Blender.

Reluctant to take on another learning curve (though it's touted as one of the most user friendly), I've put off diving in while still been reading up on Blender & keeping it in mind.

So I would like to point our members & guests to the ambitious film Tears of Steel. This short 12 minute movie has a big budget feel & combines actors with 3D animated effects. There's quite a story behind this open source project.

The scope & scale of this short should inspire a lot of filmmakers.
We are definitely living in an era where long closed doors of opportunity are suddenly opening wide.

You can watch the film on youtube or DL it from most torrent sites. Personally with the attention to detail, I recommend DL'ing a high-rez copy for your viewing enjoyment.
