Looking for a video asset management system was created by julianboudier
Dear distinguished colleagues,
I know that many must have an expertise in this field and wanted to get your feedback and experience on video asset management system that would integrate in a FCPX environment.
I am looking for a video asset management system (basically a private video bank system).
The specs would be:
The purpose would be to have a database where we could store everything that we shoot or get from external video crews so that we can easily access and dowload them later for editing in their original format.
Users would have to access it on Macs or PC internally and externally (over lan or the internet) for consultation. They would only access a lo-rez version so that the network does not explode because of the video bitrate.
Using keywords, users would be able to go through the footage and watch it online.
What would be even greater is if producers could make edit notes from the interface so as to provide us with editing instructions.
The system has to be scalable so that we can add more storage as we go. We would like to host it ourselves.
We are not a media company, therefore we cannot afford a multi-thousand dollars system.
I am sure some of you are using or even admin such systems, I would be grateful if you could give me some advice or reference of solutions. Today, we are using a synology rack station for some of our footage but we would like something more integrated and more tailored to a video production environment.
Thanks a million

I've been designing and building these systems for about a decade now! HA!
You're asking for a LOT and not be in the thousands.
Final Cut Server would have been the best choice around. If you can find a copy of it on eBay or something, you're in business. Mac and PC, scalable, interfaces with other software, it was amazing. And still runs just fine if you can find a copy.
Second choice would be CatDV.
After that you're in to consumer and work-around level solutions for all of the functionality you're asking for.
Feel free to contact me off forum for more detailed info.

Take a look at the very simple but effective
Axle Video
A good cloud option would be AFrame
Or if you just want browsing of files & delivery look at Quixel

Thanks to both of you for your replies and shame on me for taking ages to respond
I have had a look at what the solutions you referred to and the way to go seems to be either CAT DV or Axle Video. In terms of workflow, functionalities and pricing Axle seems to be the right fit, I am a little bit worried that they are in the start up phase... CAT DV seems more robust but it seems that for what i want to do, I need to bring in a reseller (I am based in France) who will have loads of product to place...
Ben, as you seem to have a in depth Knowledge of CAT DV, how complex is it to implement?
