I would imagine to transcode the RED raw file into a requested file format.
This is something I have been waiting, I don't think we will see it anytime soon.

Yes, one of the reasons is the one AppleGuru mentions.
The other reason is that a bunch of new iMacs attached to a network storage would be perfectly fast "number crackers"
even to convert Red raw to ProRes.

Unfortunately I don't have a "bunch of new iMacs attached to a network storage" - a customer asked.
