Compressing before editing.. Prevent lag? was created by jrdas
At the moment i am editing 1080p clips and getting alot of lag,
Has anyone ever compressed the files before editing then overwrite the files with the orignal (1080p) files?
Would this work?
P.s poxy file editing is not doing me any good at the moment

What are the original's formatted/encoded as?
What specifically are you overwriting them with (format/coded)?
If using proxies is not helping your system performance, I'd look at the system itself. What are the specs?

Why you want to overwrite the files into original one ? you can try some converters to help you.

And you think, when burden the NLE additional de-compressing you'll get rid of lag?
Solve your prob at its roots:
But adding even-more-compressed = complex material doesn't solve lagging.
"doesn't work is no error description!"
SCNR!
Using Proxy is exactly, what you have in mind, without the disadvantages mentioned before.

Solve your prob at its roots:
- distribute app, cache, Projects and Events on several, external 'platters'/hard drives.
- keep on drives 'room for breathing', esp. the OS-drive asks for tons of GBs free while editing
- avoid nesting as much as possible; esp. 'compounds within compounds' are a neck-braker. Get used to FCPX' special treatment of 'stacked' material (magnetic timeline, cmd-alt-arrow-down), you can avoid in many cases nesting!
- in case you're handling Multicam: switch-off the Angle-Viewer - sounds a bit weird, but if you 'know' the diff. angles, you can edit blindfolded with the shortcuts 1,2,3,… . After applying the diff. perspectives, you can adjust edits in the timeline..
But adding even-more-compressed = complex material doesn't solve lagging.
