Apple's default share settings in both FCP X 4.1.1 and Compressor 4.1.1 are not optimized- that i every time I go to upload videos with these settings YouTube prompts me under "Video / Audio quality:"
"Your videos will process faster if you encode into a streamable file format. For more information, visit our Help Center"
I used to let it take the time it needed to let YouTube convert, but now my batch uploads are stalling out (10+ videos at a time) and I don't have time to upload them one by one.
I tried poking around and changing settings to no avail- I'm interested to know what settings other users are using to circumnavigate this.

Others may have a better idea but here is what I do:
1. Make a custom setting in Compressor, which you could do by duplicating the HD 720 built-in that is under "Publish to YouTube" and then making the change to 1080 on the Video tab.
2. On the General tab, under General Properties, make sure that Optimized for network use is checked. This provides the streaming info that YouTube wants.
I also find it helpful on the Video tab to make sure that "Add clean aperture information" is unchecked so that there is no cropping when I preview in QT player.
Hope that helps.

I didn't know that Optimize for Network would provide the streaming info YT looked for. I'll have to try that.
My practice has been to select multi-pass in the QuickTime Settings and manually enter a bit rate, which then allows you to choose streaming.

While we're at it, what about Entropy mode (whatever that is)? I've always used multi pass encoding for best quality and smallest file size, but using that requires CAVLC on the Entropy mode. I read somewhere that now it's better to use CABAC, even though this limits you to single pass encoding. Which is better? CAVLC/multipass or CABAC singlepass?
And, H.264 profile for YouTube/Vimeo: High, Main, or Baseline?

I am not a compressor expert. I did a bunch of web surfing to get ideas then tried encoding a 20 second master file eleventy seven ways to see what worked for me. I wound up with a setting that works well for me. It is 720p, but the results look OK full screen on my 27" imac
I started with a copy of HD 720p and modified it.
General tab: checked the optimize for network use box
Video tab:
* changed the quicktime settings to current frame rate, keyframes every 15 frames, best quality multipass, limit bandwidth to 10000 kbit/sec
* High profile
* CAVLC (CABAC forces a change back to single pass)
Audio tab: don't think I changed anything

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share with you what I use as Compressor settings for Youtube.
First I export all my project from FCPX in ProRes422.
The Youtube recommended settings are :
Container .mp4
Video codec h.264
Progressive scan (no interlacing)
High Profile
Close GOP, GOP of half the frame rate
CABAC
Variable bitrate. No bitrate limit required, though we offer recommended bit rates below for reference
Audio Codec: AAC-LC
Channels: Stereo or Stereo + 5.1
Sample rate 96khz or 48 khz
source : support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en
In compressor, I created a custom Setting, from MPEG-4 format.
In the general tab:
-I tick "Optimize for network use"
In the video tab:
-Frame size : 1920x1080 (because I shot in 1080p and it is the best resolution YT accepts)
-Pixel aspect ratio : Default for frame
-Frame rate : 29.97 (because it is the frame rate I shoot with my GoPro)
-Field order : ----(Progressive)
-H.264 Profile : High
-Entropy mode : CABAC
-Key frame interval : 15
-Data rate : 30000kbps (the maximum allowed because I want the best quality before I upload to Youtube, and the videos I export are usually quite short (about 2minutes), so the export is not too big (few hundreds of MB top)
-Multipass: no (because I use CABAC so single pass only)
-Frame reordering:Yes
In the audio tab:
-Channel layout : Stereo
-Sample rate : 48kHz
-Data rate : 128kbps
This gives about 13.5 GB/hour. It works pretty well, but still I'm not sure it is the best setting.. Let me know what you guys think..
