Hi,
I have some old footage that was natively shot in XVID. I figured I should convert this so I could use it in FCPX. Any suggestions on how to make compressor accept it?

When I get XVID on my desk, I use
MPEG Streamclip
to transfer it to ProRes. Faster than Compressor.

Believe I still need some type of codec installed. MPEG Streamclip only plays the audio out of the box.

Nope, trying to avoid installing anything extra. But perhaps it's a necessity?

You will indeed need the free Perian QuickTime component for XVID playback. But be aware that good old Perian creates conflicts with FxFactory FCPX plugins. So if you use FxFacory in FCPX you will have to deactivate Perian whenever you don't need it. You can easily do this in System Preferences.
