My company has been using FCPX and Compressor for multiple lecture and demo courses. We have footage from 2 separate camera's that we import into FCPX. We create separate Final Cut Projects for multiple chapters. Using the same footage being filmed consistently on 2 separate SD cards, one for each camera.

When we import and edit our full Final cut project file. Everything seems to be fine. We go to Compress and it will start to compress for a few seconds on certain chapters and then say, "Failed" with no other explanation. If I have 6 projects and I compress the first 4 and they come out perfectly fine, using the same footage and then the 5th project Fails and then the 6th is fine. Why do you think it does this to particular project files? It cannot be corrupted footage. When this happens, which is weekly now, we have to bring the footage into FCP7 and Re-edit the entire project, let's say Chapter 5 the one that Failed. It will then export and compress fine when put into FCP7.

We have tried changed file formats and types and have followed all other forums and advice, google, etc that we can find. It is slowing our production flow down tremendously. Why would this possibly be happening?

I see this is an old post so hopefully you have solved your problem by now. If not, it would appear that Compressor needs to be either repaired or re-installed and the Qmaster files and prefs deleted. If you are now running FCPX 10.1 with Compressor 4.1 then possibly repairing Compressor would be all you need to do (using the free Compressor Repair program from Digital Rebellion).

What is your input format?
What is your output format?
Where are you saving the output?
How much free space do you have on your various drives?

I am saving the output on a External HD which has 4TB enough space.

A .mov container can hold many different formats. I'll assume that since you are using a DSLR that the original media is H.264. That still doesn't tell me enough. What size and frame rate? When you created your master output in FCPX did you output H.264 or ProRes? 1080? 720? What frame rate? Are you using the compressor pre-set to "create Blu-ray" or something else?
