With export bundles in FCPX is compressor now surplus? I haven't bought the standalone application (I had constant battles with it in FCS) and now seem to have no reason to.

I just export a ProRes file and use Adobe Media Encoder. It runs faster and I find that Adobe's h.264 codec has less artifacts

Hi Lee,
Compressor is still very useful when you want to create specific custom presets for your exports.
We have a client who runs a quality online tv-channel on his own dedicated servers. The media he is bringing in always has the same format (AVC-Intra) and the specific programs we make for him always have the same length (between 4 and 5 minutes). We have done many test conversions to create a custom Compressor setting that produces the highest quality vs file size and conversion time for his specific projects.
We have added this preset to our Destinations list and now we can export directly from the timeline (and as a background process, which is very practical) using this Compressor preset. I guess that's one example of how Compressor still can be useful in this new line-up.

Not only what Ronny says, but you can customize your exports much deeper. Some parts of your projects might need a bit less compression than others. You can set that in Compressor.
Media Encoder is faster than Compressor with standard h.264, but I use x.264. It is even faster and has a much higher quality than ME and Compressor.

I never updated Compressor to 4.X with Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5.
Using the new Share destinations feature I can use Compressor 3.5.3 to create encode presets for Flash, WMV and x.264.
The slight wrinkle is that the Compressor .setting files that you want Final Cut Pro X to see when creating a new Share destination need to be in
Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Settings/
As Compressor 3 stores its .settings files in Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Compressor/ it's a matter of creating a new 'settings' folder and moving or copying some of the .setting files into it.
