I just started using FCPX and Motion 5 and I am having a blast. Here is my latest project in which I used steam effects and a surface mirror effect in Motion 5 and green screen effects in FCPX.

Lovely music. Very subtle little film. The movie clips fading in & out over the piano are effective. I particularly liked the first one with the swirling world giving us a kind of hawk's eye pov. The horses were great as well. Had to watch it again to grasp the "steam punk" connection, which wasn't really a connection but something you added for some unknown reason. The whole thing is a bit disjointed, though not unpleasant. There are a couple of long pauses where we just have piano music without any film overlays, that along with the tempo does lend to a slight drag. There's one missing effect I would have enjoyed, though it might be a bit difficult to accomplish. With the human eye's propensity to be drawn to the rule of thirds, I would have preferred our dividing line between tinkling ivory keys & ebony film screen to have shifted down to the lower third rather than remaining static at midway. Admittedly you must have had that camera locked down, but perhaps filming it at a high res & expanding your frame by 25% or so, could give you enough leeway to be able to slowly key the shift as we near the end of act one.

Other than that, I'd say save the steampunk scene for another project. Instead, maybe create a clever tracking intro shot over the length of the strings as we move towards you thru the open grand, & embellish the slow sections with a few more movie clips in perhaps another region of the frame. Why not some misty fog wafting over the keys with slow motion galloping horses at 20% opacity?

Nice work, Amaruk, & congratulations of creating an interesting way to give us a piano lesson.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and comments regarding my movie TrixTrax!!

The steampunk connection is very weak as is, I completely agree. I should have mentioned it in a title or something. The authors of the classical adventure game Riven (the sequel to Myst) were influenced by J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) in how they built their story. Although LOTR is not steampunk, Riven is. And the backdrop in the first scene is from the game Riven.

I like your suggestion to keep a better tempo with regards to the overlays going a way on some sequences. I see that now that you pointed it out to me. That is a great suggestion!

I will try my best to add movement to the static angle of the keys (pan and zoom) as I agree that it would make things more interesting to watch. 25% sounds like a good number to aim for. The camera in that angle should have resolution to handle that. Perhaps I should mention that in that angle the reflection in the piano is a fake reflection that I created in Motion 5. I did that so that I could swap the piano logo as the the golden piano logo was also added as an effect in Motion 5. A Bösendorfer piano as it looks that I am using, of the length shown in the second scene, costs close to $200K (!) and I shot all my movies in my living room at my digital piano. :)

Thanks again!!
