izotope RX3 advice

Hey All. izotope is having a sale on the new RX3, which includes a new Dialogue Denoiser and a (apparently pretty awesome) Reverb Killer. All of the really good stuff is in the "Advanced" version, not the $250 one.

I've been running into a A LOT of bad audio lately, and while FCPX's built in noise reduction can do a really good job where there's a good signal to noise ratio, it definitely has its limits after-which it really does more harm than good.

Does anyone have any experience with RX3? Even at the reduced price it's $750, but I can justify that if it really is that good.

They have a ten day trial. Try for yourself and find out. I saw the demo at the super meet. It was awesome, but it was a demo...

We are using RX2 Advanced in PTools and have been extremely satisfied with it. Very powerful noise reduction tools, and Spectral Repair is a godsend. It takes some time to learn how to make best use of the different plugins, especially when you have to deal with really difficult audio issues (which fortunately we don't get that often). But the Izotope tools are definitely best in class.

We are also giving Logic Pro X a serious test run at this moment and the RX2 plugins seem to work perfectly inside the app.

I haven't used the DeReverb module yet (this is new in RX3) but I have seen the demo as well and I think you should not get your hopes too high on this one. I think it will do a great job drying up light reverb, but in the demo I heard the filter affecting the original audio too much to my liking. But of course that's just my provisional opinion until our audio guy, who has much more knowledge about this than I have, has the time to really test this.

Anyway, we will be updating to RX3 Advanced for sure as the improved Denoise features alone seem to justify the price of the entire update.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I grabbed the demo and did a few tests on a few projects recently that FCPX's noise reduction couldn't handle.

Cleaned them up beautifully.

I have a few very big projects coming up on which I've fought with the audio on 2 mic'd participants (interviewer/interviewee), with one having much more "ambience" than the other.

I ended up biting the bullet. Feeling buyers remorse at the moment but i'm sure after the next few jobs it will pay for itself nicely.

I just saw the demo at the Vegas super meet and was pretty impressed. I'm wondering is anyone using this inside of FCPX? If so, how is the performance? I'm playing with the trial and noticing that it's kinda laggy (of course I am applying it on a multi cam clip... so perhaps that is it?

I've had RX3 Advanced for about 6 months and while it's costly it's also been well worth it for me.

It is pretty processor intensive though. The plugin for FCPX works well, but making adjustments on the fly can be sluggish- even on my MacPro. I've tried playing around with it within the native app and even SoundtrackPro and real-time performance seemed better.

If you have a chance to talk to them on the floor- find out if they're planning on any optimization - in general or for GPUs.

Did they mention any updates coming?

If you aren't looking to sell the farm, check out SoundSoap . I've gotten fantastic results using it for background noise reduction (hiss, fans, etc.), and it is usually spot-on without requiring a lot of specialized audio knowledge. Works great with my FCP 10.1 and I've been using it in Logic without any problems either. Works in ProTools too ;)
