Setting up a new iMac today and I realized that Resolve Lite is now on the Mac App Store. Just a nice convenience if you need it.

Except the app store version doesn't see the database from the BMD version. I'm guessing it is a side effect of sandboxing for the app store. Now to figure out a way to get it to look at/for the existing database.

This is good news. I wonder if one day there will be a version released in the Appstore with a little more functions than the basic lite version. An intermediate version could be sold in the Appstore giving a more direct connection with Mac based editors / colorist.

Since only noise reduction, 3D media, 2K, XYZ DCI color space, BMD control surface support, and networking are mostly the only things missing, I'm not sure what an in-between product would realistically look like.

That said, both downloads are the same file size, so I don't see why the full blown paid for software version can't be on the App Store very soon.

You got to love the way Black Magic does business. Its amazing that software is free in the first place, considering what it used to cost.

No doubt a whole generation of students are going to learn how to CC on Resolve Lite, and when they finally enter the workplace the VFX houses will have bought the full version.

Not to mention for broadcast out you have to buy their hardware. It is a very proprietary, closed system. But it is a great way to sell hardware.

I'm at NAB Show, have played with both Production Camera and Pocket Camera. Red killers. Both come with full version of Resolve.

Not to mention Resolve 10 (release Q3 2013) has the FCPX Inspector window, FCPX looking multi-track audio, brings lover filters (yes, reads plugins now), can read projects from different NLEs to finish & assemble into one output, gradient window, so much more, will be a huge game changer. Now each editor can work in their preferred NLE and the finisher using Resolve doesn't have to care..

I'm posting details on my NAB Show journal.

I was never a BMD fan until I attended their press conference Monday morning. Full live production pipeline, super affordable, super powerful, their 6g Ultra HD line, simply amazing. Beating Red at their own game. The new rack mount audio monitor is to die for. AJA, eh, nothing impressive at all. Red, nothing to write home about. Vision Research, Phantom 4K is to die for! "SliceX with Mocha" is nothing short OS miraculous. Being able to bring Mocha tracking data into Motion 5 is astounding.

Hard to say if they are a RED Killer... interesting how many are biased against RED the company that really made it happen... if they can't deliver. :woohoo:
Preordered the 2.5 K Blackmagic Design Camera delivery date N/A reason why we went with RED.

Defiantly going to get one for personal use.

P.S. yeah fanboys! :woohoo:

OK, two downsides to BMD cams. No 60 fps, and was told "if" it ever comes, it will be a long time away and possibly a new model. Sounds like hardware limitation. No slo-mo or smooth fast action from BMD in the foreseeable future.

Asked about low light performance. Got a run-around. Will "assume" it isn't all that in low light . But will wait for real world reviews before I decide to purchase.

The pocket cam may be fun for personal use.
