In September 2011 I created an improved Ticker title for Final Cut Pro X 10.0.1.

October 2012 update: I've added some new features. Primarily the text can also move from left to right - useful for non-roman script systems. This new version will work in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.5 and newer.



If you need to show a ticker-type feed of text scrolling across your screen, download this effect. You get control over overall vertical position, border and shadow for text and background strip.

Most usefully, when you change the text size, the background strip changes size to match your words.

October 2012 update: You can also crop the ticker so that it isn't the full width of your project, and choose the horizontal start position for the text. The default length is much longer too. Note that single text items in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 cannot be more than 32,768 pixels wide - this limits most tickers to 3 minutes in length, but you can overlay titles on top of each other to simulate longer tickers.

Alex, please only one important thing is missing inside the setup parameters : the Angle of the background shadow
Cos the shadow just back to the bar as no interest or visual effect.

I thought of publishing the background angle, but felt that given that the background is a rectangle that is usually as wide as the screen, the angle is irrelevant.

I understand that the range on the background Distance slider isn't great, however you can enter or drag larger values than 100 (and less than zero if you'd like the shadow to be 'above' the background) to get more effects.

Alex, i agree that you can play over the 100% with the shadow back, prob is, it is far to be correct (you have the shadow at the both side, up and down).
Maybe it is to hard to correct it and i understand, but to get the professional looks getting the shadow only on the bottom with an angle
wil make your product 100% useful.

Thanks for offering, Alex. Ok, I'll try to explain an idea that I'd like to see, though I don't know if this is possible. First thing, I hope I can articulate it clearly...

So, now we can have words that scroll or crawl from right to left or vice-versa. It would be nice after the message finishes its crawl that we could have the whole rectangle banner rotate either up or down on its horizontal axis as if it were a long square box if viewed from either end. As the box rotates it would be great to have new words already on the emerging surface as it rotates into view. The difficult part is that those words undergo a perspective change.

This effect used to be accomplished physically on certain signs, I've seen it in old films, where the signs had many changing choices usually at airports, train stations, horse betting tracks, or perhaps stock markets. The rotation is accompanied by a sound effect, & the look is very rich & textured in 3D space, unlike the scrolling crawl which is flat.

I like the idea of the scrolling ticker that we see under every news cast, reaching the end of its run, then suddenly rotating with an eye catching message. The colors of the rotating surfaces on which the letters are emblazoned could be different as it revolves, adding another dimension to the alert level. The letters that roll up or down could be made to look as if illuminated from within the box, shining outwards.

Not sure if this is possible, or if it's too big of a dream...
but ... surely... we have to dream big

Alex, this is amazing, great job! Just wondering since you are doing an update, if you could lengthen the text it accepts? Or would that screw it up for most people? I saw above how you could adjust it in Motion 5, but sadly I don't have that yet and it wouldn't open in Motion 4. I would need to be able to scroll continuously at the standard speed for at least 1 minute without looping, preferably 2 minutes.

I've edited the first post in this topic to reflect the changes. The main change is that I've added the option for text to move from right to left (as well as be still).

I've also made the title able to display more text, mrbillysir, but note that there is a 32,768 pixel width limit to a single text item in FCP X.

Great Job man 10x a Lot!!! Your Ticker is fantastic:)) no more strobe and revers field in craw text of PAL 720x576 4x3 upper field dominance. But still have a reverse fields in crow at exporting a DV mov file that is a native lower field.
QM - is it possible in ticker have a field dominance choice?

Here are two ideas:

Try creating a 50p compound clip in an event with my ticker in it. Perhaps it will display properly when placed in a 25i timeline.

Alternatively, you could try this special version of the effect set up as interlaced, lower field first in Motion.

Move the current 'Alex4D Ticker+.moti' from its folder in the Alex4D folder of the Titles folder and replace it with this:

But the same situation:(
The general problem is at no custom export of quicktime movie:((
1. when I make a project PAL SD 720x576 25i it is a upper field dominance and when I export a ProRes or Uncompressed .mov it is fine - But if I export a DV .mov the craw text is no good. End using compressor no result.
When I made a project PAL SD 720x576 DV 25i it is a lower field dominance and the craw text is Ok but when I export a DV .mov direct from FCPX it is Ok but I cant correct the quality and codec it always a DVC25 PAL bit I ned a DV PAL. End when I export a ProRes or Uncompressed for recomposes the text is no good;(
Any Ideas??
