So it seems Apple is content to update only their useless laptops and, sometimes, their iMacs. Hardware-wise, Apple usually falls behind PCs in overall power. I'd like a powerful Mac but the 2013 model is now 3 years old. I don't think it is unreasonable for me to desire an update to this ancient (relatively speaking) hardware. I mean I can't upgrade it myself as nobody makes faster CPUs for it, I can't buy faster GPUs for it, etc etc. iMacs have nowhere near enough ports for me, etc etc.

Why is Apple failing so hard on the hardware front?

My guess... Mac Pro is not as profitable as other consumer gadgets. Not every Joe buys a Mac Pro but lots of people buy watches / phones / tablets so where the $$ is, there is Apple. From technically standpoint they have no excuse for not updating the MacPro. Brodwell EP Xeons are out for some time now, Nvidia has some nice Quadro GPUs based on Pascal or even Maxwell and AMD has WX 7100, WX 5100, WX 4100 Radeon Pro Polaris GPUs [ex FirePro]. Not a single computer OEM sells today workstations based on 3 years old technology, and even when it was released the MacPro was already outdated one generation. Apple was always one step behind PC hardware, even the new MacBook releases are...outdated. HP, Dell and all other laptop manufacturers already sell products with Kabby Lake CPU architecture and Apple just upgraded to Skylake. And to answer your question, YES, the 6.1 MacPro is a relic in 2016, YES Apple is behind competition, and NO, it it doesn't care.
