I'm SO close to ordering one but would really like to know the difference in real life time saving between 2x500 and 2x700 grraphic cards?!

My order went in yesterday. Hopefully Apple is being pessimistic with the general "February" ship times.

For $600, I'd put the beefiest GPUs in this machine you can get, since FCPX and Motion are SO GPU oriented.

I went 8-core, D700, 1TB SSD, 64GB RAM.

I ordered the 6 core with D700's. D500's is more than enough for me but for only 600 I'd say it's like putting something in the bank for later. 1-3 years from now GPU's will be handling a lot more than now so down the road it'll be worth it I think.

I'm also hoping "february" will turn out to be more like mid january but I'm not too optimistic as Apple already stretched the "coming in december" date/phrase to its absolute limits.

The pro does seem to be more upgradeable than previously was expected, at least from what I could see in this video

As I also replied to you in another thread so you know what I'm talking about: the encoding in wirecast is GPU based and wirecast does openCL as far as I know (but you should check if it matters to you)

The CPU can be replaced in Mac Pro www.macrumors.com/2013/12/27/new-mac-pro...-have-removable-cpu/

OWC connected 6 Thunderbolt displays to one Ma Pro. It is on the same page.

What is actually funny (or not) is that everything we're discovering in these past weeks are things Apple could have told us a long time ago but they didn't.

They could have said:

"Listen guys, let's get things straight here: Everything including the CPU is upgradeable only not all might be user upgradeable. Oh, and the Mac Pro's will be online at december 19th and first units will be shipping at the end of december."

So why are they so secretive? I understand they can't disclose everything but my guess is that in their experience all this guessing, not knowing, etc, is creating a buzz. Apple isn't stupid and I'll bet there are financial benefits to their secrecy.

They even got me excited about a computer i bought but isn't going to be delivered until february! Normally I would tell a company to get lost with those delivery times... They even got me excited about paying 5-6K for a workstation that doesn't even include keyboard or mouse or thunderbolt cable! I was happy to be able to pay... Those guys in Cupertino are messing with our minds :-)

Anyway,

Great to see the upgrade-ability of the cpu, means that in a year or 2-3 I could buy an 8 core or 12 core should I need one.

André

That is a definite possibility although I hope it will be there rather sooner than later. I ordered it the 19th but still no definite date from Apple, only: Ready for shipping in February

I ordered the morning orders were first taken, through my Apple business account rep. He swore all orders in that day would arrive by end of Dec. My delivery date status says "February". Ugh...

Secrecy is not exclusive to Apple. They are known for being the top innovators in the industry. If they hinted at what was coming too soon, and too often, the competition would have too much of an advantage. But most corporations are very secretive. We just don't buy their stuff like we do Apple's.

CEO of Samsung (true story, BTW) was in a limo on his way to a meeting to show off their new, soon to be released, block buster, cutting edge smart phone. The same morning Apple announced the first iPhone. He got the news on that drive. Someone in the car with him is quoted as saying he was super impressed, and said "Well, trash that new phone! We have to start over!" He didn't mention that phone at the presentation, but announced they were working on a new phone.

It is a very competitive market.

And yeah, it creates buzz, too. But notice that Apple is more open than before with Mr. Cook at the helm. Jobs would never have mentioned a Mac Pro until it shipped.

Nice story about the phones, didn't know that!

Still don't get why it takes them so long to get their affairs in order but I guess it's worth the wait

Have you ever seen a design meeting at Apple? That can go on for months before they figure out how something will look, feel, and act. Actually making it after that is the easy part.

You can only make so many of an object so fast. When the orders overwhelm you, well, folks have to wait.

BTW, the thing I hate most in life? "Waiting"

That's not what it's saying.

In essence what they're saying is don't expect to be able to walk into an Apple store and pick up a MacPro until March, cause all our stock is going to meet online orders. Until they've been able to catch up with demand, there's no point in wasting chassis on stock configs sitting in Apple retail stores.

That makes perfect sense because venn diagram of people who want a MacPro and those who just want to walk into Apple retail and grab one is probably pretty small.
