Deaturate Shadows And Highlights with fine controls 02 Nov 2016 17:46 #82003
Dear friends,
im new to the board and id like to share this FCPX effect which i find quite useful when color grading directly in FCPX. Sometimes in CC you want to drag the shadows to a strong blue or green tone (or anything else). Problem is that coloured shadows look somewhat unnatural. The integrated color board delivers saturation controls but they are too widespread over the values and offer no fine control. With this effect you can define the range, curve and soft or hardness of the selected matte and desaturate a specific range of shadows. Try it out and you´ll know what i mean. Below some notes on usage and a download link. If you try it out, let me know what you think ![]() Yours Daniel Link: drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwVarNhTW5-7eHRqSlF0WjJ4XzQ _______ Desaturate Shadows and Highlights Usage: Desaturate Shadows activates shadow desaturation range Sets the threshold for Dark Areas low value = select few shadows (0 = none) high value = select a lot of shadows (100 = selects all but pure white) (default = 25) saturation Desaturates selected pixels low value = Desaturate (0 = selected Areas become Black and White) high value = add saturation 50 = do nothing 100 = double (add) saturation default = 25 curve (gamma) fine tune selected range and curve shape default = 1 soft Softens the selection threshold low value = hardens the transition from desaturated to untouched pixels high value = softens the transition from desaturated to untouched pixels default = 100 blur Blurs selection matte and smoothes transition from desaturated to untouched pixels Desaturate Highlights activates highlights desaturation other controls same as above |

Hi Daniel, first of all Welcome to fcp.co ...
call me stupid - but what is that? no plugin, because all masks etc are for your example pic. pushing the published sliders has no effect - … or are too subtle for my old eyes? so, what am I doing wrong?? |

Hey Karsten,
thank you for trying it out. You should immediately notice the effect when you apply it. However, if you use it on clips with low saturation, it might be hard to notice. Try the following: Apply a strong look to your clip with a LUT or Color Correction and then apply the effect. You should see that Shadows get desaturated and with the sliders you can very accurately define which and how much shadows will desaturate. Problem is that you usually do this with a nice Luma vs. Saturation curve. Sliders are a bit complicated for that purpose, but when you get used to it, it works. I actually use it quite often. |
