We have often looked at the animated globe maps in iMovie and wished they could have been included in FCPX. Thanks to a clever trick, you can have access to the maps and globes directly in Final Cut Pro X without having to re-render each one out as a movie.

For anyone still interested on this, I found another way to do it:

1 - Go to the folder where the iMovie generators are located. In my case it is "/Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/MediaProviders/MotionEffect.fxp/Contents/Resources/Templates.localized/Generators.localized".

2 - Copy the "Maps" folder to the Final Cut Pro generators folder. In my case, the destination folder is "~/Movies/Motion\ Templates.localized/Generators.localized ".

Final Cut Pro detects the new generators folder after a few seconds and lets you use the Maps as you would on iMovie.

Oszo's advice is spot on and super easy. I've done this with lots of Macs. Thank you for mentioning that solution, Ozo!

Very interesting, however it doesn't't for for me. The resulting iMovie video shows up black in FCPX. Also Oszo's solution doesn't work. Although copying the maps to the b=generators folder in FCPX works fine and the maps show up iunder generators, clicking them results in a red screen with exclamation mark and a "2" (whatever that means). So no luck

Just went back to FCP and verified, Oszo's solution worked perfectly fine for me. Be sure you have the latest version of both installed.

Oszo (or anyone),

Have 2 questions for you re. your solution pasted here...

1. I've looked in my iMovie directory and there's no "Maps" folder:

"/Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/MediaProviders/MotionEffect.fxp/Contents/Resources/Templates.localized/Generators.localized".

But the maps ARE showing in iMovie. Do you or anyone else know where else they might be hiding??

MacOS 10.13.6
iMovie 10.1.2

2. Also, after you paste the maps folder into FCP, where do you actually find the Maps to use them??

Thanks for any help!

You can’tt iMovie maps into FCP except as part of an iMovie project.

Hi Tom. When I export the timeline from iMovie to FCP they come in as "movie" files (not map generator files) - which means I can't change the from - to location. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?? Thanks

I don’t know if it was possible back then. If you can only export a finished movie as a video file then that’s what was available then.

I just deleted the Maps folder from my FCP "Generators" folder, which I originally got from inside the iMovie app. Emptied the trash. And did Oszo's process of copying it all from inside iMovie to FCP's Generators folder again. Works like a charm. macOS Big Sur, latest iMove and FCP versions. Not sure why y'all aren't see it inside iMovie or it's not working inside FCP. Repeated this on two MBPs and it works just fine.

So the paths where you found the Maps folder inside iMovie was the same as Oszo mentioned? And when it’s copied there you should find it inside the generators menu right?
