Why you shouldn’t use a mask for masking … was created by Karsten Schlüter
While helping a bit forum member Tobias in his affords to re-engineer the screen-design of German sportschau (weekly football report) for his 8y old kickers, I realised you can not rotate masks.
From the beginning:
To create a Loupe effect, you simply clone the source, zoom in and ‘cut a hole’ with a mask. Easy.
(Watch attached video)
So, we made a nice little animated graphic, added a circle-mask - easy.
But …. When you rotate the graphics around x (tilt), as in TV, you can not rotate the circle-mask … pitty.
Plan b):
Instead of a circle mask apply an image-mask; here: a circle.
Adding the circle to our animation group allows us:
• Mask and animated graphics perfectly match, even keyframed around the screen
• Zooming in/out the graphic automatically matches the mask.
• Rotating the group rotates the mask too - because it's a graphic…
Tl;dr:
Instead of the mask-tool, consider an image-mask as the more flexible tool for masking.
If you're interested in our final plugin, post here .....

What if you put it in its own Group, and rotated the Group?

yep, that what comes up first to mind - but doesn't work in this case, have a look, screengrab of the video I attached above:
the zoomed, bigger layer has to stay 'flat'/not rotate, but the 'hole' = mask should change its shape according to some graphic. layer above all that.
at first, the animation and the circle-mask were both linked to some slider ... until I noticed, a circle-mask can only be rotated along z-axis ....

ahh, Luís, for sure, soccer-dads united!
hold on for a second, translating GUI German>>English....
aaaand done: /s. attachement/
meanwhile we added two other features:
an optional drop-shadow and adjustable thickness of the segments … not top of the list on my agenda, but … anyhow.
