Theres one in the generators, but it may be only frames instead of time

that one is not usable. you can build something out if it. though it's very unpractical.
i'm sure this can be made with motion and then publish it to fcpx, but i have no idea how to do it nor where to begin with

Exactly what do you need, what must it look like?

How is the one that comes with FCP X unusable/unpractical?

ben, nothing spectacular or totally crazy ;)

just a normal stopwatch/timer with the ability to change the font and change the separators and add a backround windowbox for better reading (the user should be able to turn the box off)

format should be 00:00:00 (hrs, min, sec) - 10th and 100th of second are not a must have, but welcomed and useful for certain shots, e.g. a car race.
an option to turn off hours and minute display would sweet too.

also an option to enter a time value and let the stopwatch run from there, just like the timer/countdown could be quite useful.

i guess this sums this up

as for the generator in fcpx...

well, you can't do any formatting and you have to basically build it in multiple compound clips which makes changes a pain. also getting the generator to start from the beginning after it hits 59 could be tricky or even impossible... hence impractical.

Are you sure we're both talking about the same Timecode generator? I can pretty much do everything you claim it can't. I can do a lot of formatting. Where do Compound Clips come into play? No clue what "59" means. Do you mean 59 hours? Why not take it into Motion and customize it to work as you want it to. That's be super easy.

It already has a background you can control, it already has a counter you can simply reverse and reformat, it already does HMS, and you could add 100ths of a second to it.

i wasn't talking about the timecode generator. was talking about the "counting" filter

with 59 i mean like 59 seconds or minutes, when the timer switches back to 00.

i just looked at the timecode filter from apple and it basically does what i want... well sort of. but editing that to purely show the time without timecode connection in motion, that goes beyond my skill. i never used motion. that's why was asking here if someone could create a timer :)

So, what would you change about the Timecode generator in FCP X, exactly? I may pop one out for ya.

if i could change the timecode generator...

- remove the frames and replace it with 10th and 100th of second
- add a option to display the following (via dropdown)
hrs:mins:sec:10thsec100thsec
hrs:mins:sec
mins:sec
- option to place the clock on any position in the canvas
- option to enter a start time

if possible the same as a countdown

It already does HMS.
You can use the Transform controls to position it anywhere in the Viewer.

But yes, I'll pop it open in Motion and see what I can do.

it would be for more flexibility without jumping to much around. having the setting in one panel makes things easier :)

But yes, I'll pop it open in Motion and see what I can do.

thank you

Seriously, clicking one tab button is a pain?

not really ;)

it would just be more convenient to have in within the generator settings pane.

I would also be interested in this timing generator.

I am basically looking for a stopwatch that goes over the video. I am looking to video a 7 minute timed activity and then eventually i would like to overlay the time (Counting down from 7:00 to 0:00) and also keep count of the repetitions completed. (Probably a separate overlay and a separate generator) I have searched the internet and even downloaded Motion 5 trying to see if i could create my own, but it is all a little bit over my head.

For the counting plugin it would be something where i could hit a keystroke when the count needs to advance, not something that just counts up on a prescribed rhythm. I would be willing to pay a developer for a handy plugin that was functional but allowed me to customize the attributes.

Attributes meaning normal font functions, shadows and all that. But also the start time, count up, count down, etc.

"i could hit a keystroke when the count needs to advance"

That's not possible, there's no function in Motion to do this. But Motion can work (at least it used to) from MIDI data, and that type of system perhaps could trigger an event like that, but I'm not familiar with that part of Motion.

Bad news kids. The Timecode generator in FCP X is a pre-coded generator in Motion. It has a "Generator" section in the Text inspector, and I can't find any way to alter what it does or displays. I was assuming there was some sort of behavior or other function in Motion I could use to manipulate the actual text or some sort of numbering sequence. It's going to take someone who can dig deeper into coding effects for Motion than I know how to do.
