Rolling out an edit

I've seen it reported that you can now roll out an adjacent clip so it disappears. This is not happening for me. One frame still remains stuck in the timeline and will be disappear. Can anyone else confirm this, a, that's it's supposed to work, and b, that it doesn't.

Thanks.

I'm always forced to retain a 1 frame clip of the original.

It doesn't work for me either, it's a major flaw.

Flaw? Well, I can see it as a safety thing, too. Roll edits will not let you accidentally delete a clip. If you want to "delete" a clip, having to do it manually, IMHO, is much preferable than just rolling it out of existence that easily. I've never had the need to roll a clip to delete it, so, I'm not sure this is a bad thing. Now that I think about it, I sort of like you can't roll a clip into the void.

Sorry Ben, I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you on this.

Accidentally deleting a clip by rolling an edit is a lot like accidentally deleting it by selecting it and pressing delete.

Rolling an edit to the next and expecting it to overwrite the clip when it hasn't could go unnoticed introducing a form of flash frame, The magnetic timeline does a great job eliminating them, but this flaw brings it back.

If they really want a safety feature then put a pop up window asking "do you really want to delete this clip" but there's no need for that with other methods of overwriting a clip, or editing, it kind of contradicts the term editing.

As many first time user students as I've trained over the years, If I have to chose one method over the other, don't let rolling delete a clip. Why would you want to do this anyway?

Ok, here's one example.

You have a simple edit down on a story line, and in there you have a shot that you decide you don't want.

You don't want to replace it with another shot, and you don't want to alter the duration of the edit. All that is desired is that the previous shot lasts longer to take it's place.

You could re-overwrite the previous shot over the 2 shots, you could ripple delete it and extend (ripple) the previous shot to take over its previous duration or you could delete it and roll the edit over the new gap clip and be stuck in the same position as before.

Or you could roll the edit point.

I have.

It is very common when you work with a director to be doing this.

Sorry BenB but NocoDave is spot on.

Rolling thru edits is common practice for me and judging by posts here, quite a few other editors complaining about the missing feature. Not being able to do it in FCPX is much more likely to cause frustration with flash/black frames. In FCP7, you could do it your way and I could do it my way, we had the choice. I'd like that choice back in FCPX.

Really? I've never had use for it, my colleges here locally are telling me it something they've never done before in edits. First I ever heard of anyone deleting a clip with a roll. We've never seen a real life example. That's all.

Well it is a common procedure in movie editing. Say you have a long 2-shot and you have overwritten part of it with a CU to show an expression on the face of one of the actors. Then when reviewing the edits the director decides he doesn't want the CU anyway but he wants to keep the entire 2-shot again. In Avid and legacy FCP you just roll the edit point between the CU and the 2-shot until the 2-shot completely overwrites the CU. A one step action.

In FCP10 you cannot do this, it always leaves 1 frame of the CU. The only workaround I have found is to replace the CU with a gap (Shift-DEL) and then roll (P, drag with double arrow) the 2-shot over the gap. This does work and it completely overwrites the gap, but it's a two step action. Gaps can be rolled out, but this does not work with clips yet.

Nice find Ronny, that never worked in 10.0.2.

That was spoke about earlier on the forum, it did close in past that single frame but left a double thickness line and you couldn't continue to edit it properly. It was like a 0 duration clip that sat between 2 touching edit points.

A massive bug, at least they fixed that in 10.0.3, but it's a bit of a worry why they never fixed it all.

I just had a thought, if that's their solution, to change to and from the position tool just to be able to do this I won't be impressed. It'll will be my first real worry of where the future of trimming in FCPX is going.

Agreed. But I have to say that I regularly use the Position tool to perform some tasks that require a more "classic" style of editing. That does not bother me much, it's something you get used to and it is really fast. As long as I don't need more steps than in classic trimming to perform the same action ;)

I truly believe that trimming in FCP10 is more versatile than in any other NLE, and I think I can say that I know all serious NLEs on a professional level. The combination of the Trim tool, the Position tool and the different trimming shortcuts gives us a number of options that I always have wanted in other editing software. I really do work very fast in FCP10, especially on drama and long-form. IMO it's a matter of getting used to the new tools, though I agree some could be improved. What is reassuring to me is that Apple seems to be serious about this app and that they are listening to any valid comments. So I just sent them a request to allow rolling out a clip in one single step. I have a good idea how they could do this, let's wait for the next update B)

Definitely Ronny, I'm almost on the same wavelength. I also know other NLE's, and know the benefits more now than ever for knowledge of as many as possible, for a while now I've felt the need for something that was never available.

Over all I'm loving FCPX and when I first seen it coming it looked like it could have been it.

There are the obvious teething pains that we all know will get fixed but still just a couple of little things in relation to trimming that aren't so much yet a given.
