M1 MBP adds random black frames- not on Intel MBP or Mac Studio M2! 10 Sep 2023 10:59 #127099

Hello,
I am experiencing a really strange problem that I can only reproduce on an M1 Max Macbook pro.

I have library that has a Screenflow screen recording.
The entire file works fine on QuickTime, VLC etc and also inside FCP on three different computers:
  1. Mac Studio Ultra M2
  2. 2019 Intel Macbook Pro i9
  3. 2019 Intel Macbook Pro i7
But on the M1 Max Macbook Pro, the footage don't play correctly as there are black frames added randomly throughout the recording.

Same version of FCP, same library, same SSD.

Can anyone throw any ideas of what this can be? And why does it only affect the M1 Macbook Pro.
One more thing I want to add is that if you try and render a section where the black frames exist, the M1 MBP will not render it and it will give a message that the frame is corrupted.

The footage is fine, definitely not corrupted as it works as it should with all the other Mac computers.

Any ideas would be welcome!

Hello,
I am experiencing a really strange problem that I can only reproduce on an M1 Max Macbook pro....

I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro, also an M1 Ultra Mac Studio and a 2019 Intel i9 MacBook Pro. If you can upload that original Screenflow recording or a piece of it which demonstrates the problem, I'll examine it.

If you cannot upload the entire recording, do a short test recording with Screenflow, then verify it exhibits the same problem and send me that. If you cannot do that, duplicate the Screenflow recording in Finder, then use Quicktime Player to trim it to a small piece using CMD+T. Quicktime normally does "no encode" trimming so that should not alter the original file parameters. Verify that the trimmed piece causes the problem on your machines, then upload that to me:

Thank you so much for this- highly appreciated.
Let me try and see if I can replicate this with Screenflow first. Otherwse I will be able to send you a trimmed recording end of next week :)

I have found several SF recordings that exhibit the same behaviour- only on an M1 Max and not on any other Mac I own. It's a very bizarre problem!
