FCPX update 10.6.7 causes video freezing and heat
MacBook Pro 16" 2021, Apple M1 Max, 64 GB, 4 TB SSD
MacOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c)
FCPX 10.6.7
I noticed rather instantly with the 10.6.7 update is that the video freezes when playing or scrubbing through the timeline of a project or selecting clip ranges from the library. If I try to reopen the project after the freezing occurs I get an error message telling me 4K projects cannot be edited on my computer.
After that I close the application and I get an error message that is reported to Apple (the ones you get if an application crash). If I just quit the application after the freeze without trying to reopen the project I don't get the 4K message or the crash report. I can then restart the application but this will happen again within a while.
I was editing the same project before upgrading without issues. My MacBook Pro M1 Max can deal with this resolution perfectly. The MacBook Pro now also get very hot when it starts acting up. That NEVER happened before, even if editing 4K 60fps.
I have tried to change the playback view settings from better quality to better performance, but still same problems.
What is going on, I can't even work on my projects anymore. Anyone else experiencing the same issues?

Everything worked fine before on my 2022 Macbook Pro M1. Now regular playback of 4k video freezes and I have to restart in order to have normal playback again.
Unfortunately, this is a repeating problem and I'm having to keep restarting FCP every 10 minutes or so to get through my edit.
Very frustrating and hope they fix soon

I'm still on 10.6.5. Not sure if 10.6.7 fixes the favorite effects bug with the sound.

macOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c)?
Final Cut Pro 10.6.7
I'm having similar video playback problems. FCP freezes the video, but I can still scrub through and play audio. This started with the most recent FCP and macOS updates. I’ve deleted the library cache, created a new project and copied over the clips, and rebooted numerous times.
My 4K editing and playback was smooth as silk before this morning when I upgraded. I hope a fix lands soon because this is killing my production schedule.

Yes, it's not possible to work when it behaves like this. At least it happens to more users, so Apple are probably getting those error reports coming in.I've been having the same issue since this update!

The 4K media of the two projects are:Can you give specifics of the 4K media? Fires this happen in both the browser and the timeline?
4K, 23,98 fps, H.265 from Sony Camera, S-LOG3
4K, 23.98 fps, H.265, filmed with DJI Magic Air 2.
4K, 60 fps, H.265, filmed in Filmic Legacy from iPhone 14 Pro Max
4K, 60 fps, H.265, filmed with DJI Magic Air 2.
Two different projects. I did not mix the different frame rates.
It happens both in browser and timeline.

My timeline is a mix of:
4k, 23.98, transcoded ProRes from Pocket 6k BRAW
4k, 23.98, MP4 from an EOS R

Yeah, I hope enough people send in the crash reports. I don't remember how long it took for Apple to fix the bug when they excluded .wav files.Very interesting. I was able to edit 4K videos on a 2006 Mac Pro in Final Cut Pro 7. I wonder what they're doing to Final Cut Pro now to make it so resource intensive on a computer with more than enough horsepower. Maybe it's a bug that they will fix two or three months down the road... no rush of course. They'll get to it when they get to it.

My advice is to stay away from the 10.6.7 and get the 10.6.6 if possible.

I've documented this on FCP Cafe - fcp.cafe
I would strongly recommend not updating to this new version if you haven't already.

I need to keep editing so I actually downgraded to 10.6.6. I had a copy of the app on my time machine backup. First I exported my current projects to XML and then deleted 10.6.7 and replaced it with 10.6.6 and it has worked flawlessly since.MBP 16" M1 Max 32GB

I will for sure make a fresh Time Machine backup before upgrading to 10.6.8 and so on to avoid this hassle, just in case....

Hold option-command and launch FCPX. This will reset a bunch of things in FCP, including custom destinations, background render settings, etc. FCPX creates a zip file on the desktop from which you can retrieve the Custom destinations and read them to the preferences folder in your user folder. But, I would suggest doing this slowly to see if the pref trash even fixes your issues.

I’m not sure how 10.6.7 got released as the performance is so clearly broken on any recent Mac.

I have similar problems, but mine are worse. I'm using a Mac Design Studio. Everything was fine before the upgrade. I get the beach ball of death any time I make any edits, scroll through the events in my library, change projects. The playback breaks up also. I've quit FCP several times, rebooted, no help. Disk space and hardware diagnosis are fine. I uninstalled 10.6.7 and reinstalled. Each time I do one of these attempted corrections, it seems to work a bit better for a while, then back to sluggish performance
Have you installed the latest Pro Video Formats 2.2.6? This seems to fix some users issues.
I've been trying to document and keep track of all the bugs and issues here:

Trashing preferences was only a temporary fix and the problem soon returned.
Also updated to latest Pro Video Formats.
Have been able to resume work by reinstalling 10.6.6 from Time Machine back up as was suggested in a post above - thank you.
Reported bug to apple - along with I imagine a whole lot of people. Hopefully problem is addressed speedily.
