App Store, Catalina and FCPX

On June 21 2011, I bought the newly released FCPX for £179 from the App Store. All subsequent releases I have had for free. All good until I upgraded a MacBook to Catalina. Now I am being asked to purchase it when I go to the App Store. My original purchase is showing up as FCP (not FCPX). Anyone else experienced this? I want my access to the App back!!
Thanks

Make Store you are signed into the App Store using the Apple ID used to buy the application. Go to the Purchased page to confirm the application is listed there. If not contact App Store Support.

Thanks for the reply. The email address associated with that purchase is no longer live. However, it is my Apple ID that is logged (albeit on the current address). I have been in touch with support for three weeks. Just thought I would ask the Pro Apps community if this is a 'creeping' issue

Are you saying that the original email was used for your Apple ID? If you changed your Apple ID only Apple support can reconcile that.

P.S. If you remember the original Apple ID you can still log into the store with it even if you can't get Emil on it.

my original 'Apple ID' was under iTools back in 1998/9 which then migrated to Apple ID proper in 2004/5, the only thing that changed were the associated emails. I can see the purchase history from the current configs going back to 2005:)

I don't know what means. The Apple ID is an email address.

If you are logged in with the correct Apple ID, and see the application in the Purchased page, move the current application on your system to the trash and redownload the application.

Do you see the application on your PURCHASED page? If not you are logged in with the wrong Apple ID.

Just so you know (and maybe you do), the original Apple ID's were not required to be email addresses. For years (around mid 2000) I had an Apple ID that was a name of one of our studio locations. At some point (around 2010 or 2011 I think) Apple changed the requirement that all Apple ID's must be an email address. I worked with Apple on the phone to reconcile my previous purchases under the non-address ID and have them recognized under the email ID.

I think purchases in the App Store were always e-mail address Apple IDs.

Yes, App Store accounts have always required the modern email Apple ID. So if you did purchase Final Cut Pro X (not Final Cut Pro 7 or earlier), that ID must in fact be an email address. If you change your email address and kill off the one used for your Apple ID, it is your responsibility to have that updated with Apple (and all the other logins and vendors you used that old address for). So I'm not sure how an Apple ID and/or email address from many, many years ago has anything to do with the App Store. Or am I missing something here?

I believe for a time after the transition from the iTunes store to the App store the non-email address ID was still useable. Here is an Apple forum thread that was similar to my situation: discussions.apple.com/thread/7643962

And, here is Apple's history of the App store: www.apple.com/newsroom/2018/07/app-store-turns-10/

So when was the change to email? The OP refers to an an email address that is no longer valid. It sounds as if the original purchase in 2011 was made on an email Apple ID.

Hi Tom...I did some digging in my email archives as I have saved most of the Apple support communications I have had over the years. I found that when I had purchased my iPhone 4S in 2012 I was still using the non-email Apple ID and at that time downloaded many apps on my phone and desktop. I also found that I had contacted Apple about the change to an email address in November of 2013 at which time I relinquished my non-email ID and changed it to an email address. I believe the email addresses were able to be used as Apple ID even in late 2011, but they weren't required to be email addresses until sometime in 2013. It was required to have a valid email on file with Apple, but the actual ID could be anything. Below is a screenshot of my support call in one instance where I downloaded the Pages app on my Mac Pro using the non-email ID. In fact, I have downloaded Numbers, Keynote and others all using that non-email ID.

The key here is if you are logged into Mac App Store you can click on your photo in the lower left corner to see your Purchased apps. Tom is saying to go there to look for FCPX and it will give you a download icon which will install your previously purchased FCPX.

The email address for the AppleID is not relevant to this discussion if you are logged in and can go to the Purchased section for your logged in App Store account.

You are absolutely correct. I didn't mean to highjack this thread. I clearly did take it off topic.

After clicking on the Purchased button and seeing if the download link is there, then take care of the AppleID email address! ::grin::

What I meant was that the email address was irrelevant to us finding out what happens when leeartpatt clicks on the Purchased button! If logged in, and logged in to the purchasing AppleID, the download icon will appear there.

I have had previously purchased apps show the price when I was looking at the app in the store, and when i clicked the price they did tell me that I had already bought that app. But I'd be nervous clicking on the $299 price button when I'd much rather be clicking a download icon.
