I used to have a dual display set up I used for exactly what you mentioned. I am now using a single 27" display, but if i recall correctly, if you have your monitor connected to your MBP in FCP there should be an Icon just above the inspector window on the upper right side of of window that looks like two squares, or something like it. If you engage that, you should get the viewer on the external monitor while all the other windows remain on MBP. If that makes any sense.
This should at least be a clue. Again, I used this feature all the time on my old MacPro two-display set up.
Hope this helps.

I want the FCPX layout to stay the same BUT want to output, through a connected HDMI) to a TV screen so clients can video the Viewer full screen.

I was to keep the configuration windows on the computer and then have the TV showing the output.

Which takes me back to my original post I guess I need a Thunderbolt to HDMI box maybe from BMD or it could be that the HDMI is only 2 and not 3?

Read brochure carefully but it should do what you expect.
Other choice are I/O boxes which are more expensive .
EDIT:
Blackmagic design also offers this one:
UltraStudio Mini Monitor
Ultra small pocket sized Thunderbolt powered playback for SDI and HDMI.
$145
which is more useful if you use DaVinci resolve for grading
(usually only Blackmagic devices are supported to monitor in DaVinci Resolve )

I digress. This won't help you with this issue but it was fun to vent a little...

Other than this situation these i/o and output devices are very good indeed.

Go to the preferences of FCPX.
Go to the third point in the menu "playback"
at the bottom got to: "a/v output".
Your LG TV should appear in that box if connected to your rMBP.
Also: in FCPX go to menu "windows" and select "a/v output".
This was not mentioned yet in the discussion and sometimes people forget this second step-
I cannot recommend BMD though. I had the "mini monitor" and it drove me crazy. I heard the comparable device from AJA is less error-prone.
But HDMI never gave me a problem and it should be possible for you too.

The same with a Dell, connected via HDMI. No show when the Dell is set to 1920x1200 (which is the default size of the monitor) but it will show up in the box when set to 1920x1080. I don't know the resolution of your TV (is it 4k?) but you can try to set it to 1920x1080. SwitchResX is very helpful for that.

Sorry, that will not work. You need either a thunderbolt connection (T2 or T3) or a native HDMI output, like the mac pro or rMPB late 2013 and 2014. If you own by chance a OWC thunderbolt 2 dock or another thunderbolt device with HDMI output, then you are good to go. I use the OWC with HDMI output as well as an apple cinema Display 27' with a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adpater. I have the the same iMac as you do.
The cheaper connection with just an adapter is not working for HDMI. Maybe you go with the AJA device. AJA T-Tap. I do not like the BMD Ultra Studio Mini. I will produce errors all the time.
