New 5K Apple Display - WWDC?

I saw this article earlier...the new 5K display part seems pretty plausible at least...not sure about the external (internal?) graphics card built in to the display though?

Well ... the 5k iMac has an additional graphics processor (can't recall the house name they gave it) but it is in addition to the normal hardware configuration that allows the iMac to support the higher resolution with very reasonable speed and accuracy.

It shouldn't be too cumbersome to offer the same for a display only unit.

My main concern with higher resolution displays is that it's harder and harder for apps like Screenflow to capture a steady 60fps with such high resolution and lots of stuff going on. For many obviously this is not an issue.

I would imagine a generous estimate of the number who would see this 'issue' would be 0.001% of Mac users. If you absolutely had to guarantee 60fps then the more appropriate route would be to shoot the screen with a camera.

Screen recording in QT Player on my 5k iMac I get over 40 fps recording me hacking about in Keynote, on the web and even with FCPX playing the timeline I get >30 fps. The fcpx video is stuttering but the screen recording has a consistent frame rate. Changing retina scaling doesn't affect the frame rate much, only a couple of fps in it.

My minimum acceptable frame rate is 25 fps for screen captures which the iMac certainly meets. How does Screenflow compare to QT Player for recordings i.e. an you set the exact recording frame rate in screenflow?

Shooting a screen with a camera is just nonsense. Sorry, but that won't produce professional results.

On the other hand, not sure Screenflow would have much problem, actually. I've only used a 5K iMac once, and did in fact use Screenflow. Brought that project back to my Mac Pro, and it edited in Screenflow just fine. I'd need to hear from folks actually having issues with screen movie captures on 5K. I don't think it would be an issue.d Simply larger file sizes, that's all. Mouse cursor information is the same, everything else would be the same, just larger file sizes.

I've only been only forum a short while but long enough to work out you're a blowhard ignoramus so yes, I very much doubt you've got the professional chops to shoot a screen to anything like a professional standard.

Yes but what I often use Screenflow for is recording arcade game footage from MAME (if I don't have the actual arcade game PCB to use). Those run at 60 frames per second and not only is MAME scaling it bigger, but Screenflow now has more pixels to record. I have a 2013 Mac Pro and those are only so good at graphics things. :) Moving a mouse cursor about the screen shouldn't be an issue, I agree. The new Screenflow (which I haven't upgraded to yet) lets you adjust what area of the screen to capture so that may help.

When Thunderbolt and then Thunderbolt 2 came along, I figured it would be a matter of time before an external GPU was added to assist lower powered machines—or machines too thin to have high-end GPUs.

This was an article from February. I'm thinking everyone is picking from Marc's post here:

One thing I'm fairly certain (and we can look back and call it claim chowder later but...)

1. The new display will be usb-c with thunderbolt 3, not a split display port cable to plug into 2 tb ports
2. It won't be backwards compatible to thunderbolt 2 computers, but will need usb-c connections
3. Apple will show it off next to the new Macbook Pro with usb-c.
(and one more)
4. It could be used with the 2016 Macbook?? (I could see this, but maybe not the 2015 version? I dunno).

How much are you prepared to pay for it? Will it be a must have against the cheap 4K monitors?

The 5k Monitor + GPU is only a cheap CPU,RAM and Storage away from an iMac so it might be better value to just go buy an iMac. The pricing of the monitor is going to be very interesting and just how powerful that GPU will be.

The monitor would appear to be aimed at Macbook owners as an unannounced Mac Pro V2.0 wouldn't need a GPU in the monitor. So will apple produce a non GPU version?

From what I've read from people who know all the ends and outs of doing this, the monitor GPU would take over. For lower-end Macs, that would be an upgrade. For higher-end Macs, that wouldn't work so well.

But, they have all assumed the GPU would be one or the other—internal or external. But the Mac Pro has 2 GPU's, and other Mac Pros have been able to use 2 GPU's inside. Just because a Macbook Pro has 2 that switch between (internal and discrete), that doesn't mean the monitor GPU can't be used in tandem right?

I'm thinking along the lines of an external video card that gets all the display requirements offloaded to it (AJA, BMD, etc).

Conceivably this new monitor could also be the source of the Apple eGPU rumours that have been going around and if that's the case the GPU in the monitor would drive the screen and the dGPU in the Macbook Pro (new version) would do the compute work. You might have to close the lid or the MBP screen is deactivated in this mode.

If this does turn out to be true then the OS might be a little easier to get the eGPU boxes working as a by product. I'd love to be able to have a couple of nVidia 1080s hanging out the back of my iMac in an external box for 3D rendering. TB2 isn't a big drawback for this type of setup.

BenB has been a graciously helpful person on this forum since its inception. That way you know when he says what he is saying, he is only saying it out of being helpful and not trying to be a jerk. I figured you should know this since you are new and placing some rough accusations.

As for the screen: I can weigh in on that. I would always prefer to use the computer to capture a screen than a camera, and I think anyone would agree with that. Can you shoot it with a camera. sure, but you are asking for more variables to deal with. I guess it also depends on what your video is for. but if its for something like a tutorial, which is usually why someone would want to record a screen, a majority of the people out there capture the screen from the computer.

I stick by what I said because,

With respect, Redifer was concerned about not getting 60 fps and if that couldn't be achieved through capture software then the only option is to shoot it, that's why I suggested it. As someone who has been shooting professionally for 20+ years I know what can and can't be done to a professional level. Most professional cameras can sync to fractions of a Hz, a lens skirt and polariser may be needed to limit reflections but it's child's play to shoot a screen.

But you could also just tell him to lower the display resolution on the computer to something like 1920x1080. That should also help do what he is trying to achieve. Before getting a camera out, there are numerous ways to aide in recording a computer. I am not saying you can't get professional results with a camera, of course you can...but your always having to deal with a ton more crap.

You can't lower the resolution of a retina display!

I don't own a retina MBP, but on my 2011 you most certainly can. and this link explains how to do it on a retine MBP

I like the idea to use the volume of a display to store additional eGPUs - smart idea!
no additonal box…

same as latest China-ware, complete PCs inside the keyboard ... my Mini gets anxious...
