When using sony vegas, I used to use sony's dvd architect to do the dvd authoring.
What is a cool program that works well with FCPX?
thanks

DVD is a low rez version of the finished edit, it is standard definition, which on any fairly modern screen will look really poor quality.

In this rush to high definition, there was really no effort made to produce something akin to the dvd mastering method in high def, you might try blue ray, that really was a bag of hurt, I agree, idiots killed it off for the love of money.

If you have dvd studio pro, you might try that, but again, dvd is really low rez. The power of the dvd was in the way you could access all parts of the disk through a user designed graphical interface, aka buttons. Now nothing. Kind of annoying frankly.

That is a long standing wishlist of mine, a super high def menu based virtual disk based dvd. That may work, try creating a virtual dvd!!

only 'cool' app to create discs was and is iDVD.
I'm actually in the making of some lenghy article to post here at fcp.co, working title
"FCPX10.2+ElCap: How To Create Professional looking Wedding-DVDs with iDVD?"

yep, nice combo trigger-words: wedding video, i-thingie, professional... that's by intention! ;)

iDVD, although obsolete ~10years, is the only authoring app I'm aware of, which allows by the comfort of drag'n drop highly customized videoDVDs, with animated menus etc etc - and this does NOT mean the ready-made templates iDVD comes with....

you get a first glimpse with this 200y old website of mine
sites.google.com/site/idvdmodding/

finally: yepp, SDef only. But still … legit.

iDVD was a great app, just frustrating that with the beautiful images we have now in multiples of K, 2 4, 5 , 8 and so on, there is simply nothing to use to make the timeline once exported as interactive as a dvd menu does.

Until this was asked, I really had not thought about the user interaction with the media, I know you can create chapters in quicktime, so you can move through the edit to different points.

If someone created a FCPX compatiable menu creating tool, in the functional style of iDVD or DVD Studio Pro, I would buy it, the question then is burn to what?

700MB is really tiny, and SD well is awful compared to 5K images, a 4K virtual dvd I guess would suffice...just a thought!!

my market research basis is my teenage son… he teaches me a lot about viewing habits and he has changed mine too! 'broadcast' is sooo demanding (<< no better word at hand), 'they' tell me when to watch what!!! naw.-

… and before I lift my lazy *** from the couch to search manually for disks, I click thru netflix, iTunes, YouTube et al.
... which offer 'menus': seasons, episodes, search fields, recommendations, playlists...

Disks are a perfect present, you can keep it, put in on the shelf, wrap into gift paper, ... but are less and less used. There are habitual rituals concerning 'atoms vs bytes' (N.Negroponte) - the wedding photo shouldn't be on your wrist watch only. the wedding video should be in some box. like those wedding albums, once looked at with joy, then getting dusty in some cardbox.

Plus, most of my soccer-moms/dads/friends don't notice the diff. btw 480/1080/4000. A vertical, underexposured, blurry, shakey video looks in all res terrible ... >> no one needs UHD-BluRays, aside salesmen and a handful of afficionados ... who owns a BluRayplayer? (my son, his PS4. )

And that VR-hype ... no one liked to sit on the couch with those 3D-glases, now they ask me to wear a helmet??? For games and po*n - probably. Movies? Home movies???

… iDVD/BR-edition, that would be charming. For a few.

(yep, I'm lucky, owning a fast iNet connection)

To answer the question directly, look at Toast Titanium.

If you don't mind not having much control of menu or disc layout and just need something that is simple and will play, there are two settings in Compressor to create a DVD or create a blu-ray that are good for down and dirty burns for screenings or festivals. An external blu-ray burner can be had for around $100. They are located towards of the top of the Compressor presets.

iDVD can blow me. Such an inferior product. I mean it's fine for family videos and whatnot but not for much more. It was 480i only. DVD Studio Pro really blew it away. You could import your own self-encoded 480p files (never let it encode the videos FOR you or you'll be stuck with 480i which is unacceptable). Despite DVD still being viable (and very profitable), Apple has made up your mind for you and wants you to hate all optical-based media. DVD Studio Pro still kind-of works. Adobe Encore is better and can also do Blu-rays.

Hi gang.

I thought I'd just experiment with Compressor to build a very simple DVD.

I started with a one minute clip that I added 6 chapter markers, and Modified the names Videos 1 through 6. I exported that clip (including Chapter markers) as a master file. In Quicktime, all chapter markers show. Cool. Brought Master file into Compressor using DVD presets. Changed some metadata and title. I Checked "Use Chapter marker text as subtitles(?). Added a Jpg photo background, then burned disk.

The photo was cropped on the main screen and I guess that is not customizable. The Chapters looked great and each click played the chapter.

The one gotcha was that after that particular chapter is done it goes right into the next chapter. I was hoping that after playing each chapter, it would go back to the main menu.

Late to this party and held off on El Capitan for a while, coming from Mavericks. Is there no DVD authoring program any longer that will recognize Chapters? iDVD (under El Capitan) reports an error at the instant it goes to render the video section... Take out the chapter markers (and tried adding with FCPX, Compressor, iMovie - all fail) and the burn to a VIDEO_TS folder works fine.. I've resorted to an older MBP with Snow Leopard and bring the output from FCPX there to author a DVD.. Is there ANY software at all that works under El Capitan??

So, following on to the above post, does anyone know if the DVD Authoring Tool in Roxio Toast 14/15 (MyDVD) reads the chaptering out of FCPX or Compressor within the video? Apple no help at all, so looking for a good replacement as I said ..

Thanks..

If you export a file from FCPX with Chapter Marker enabled then both QT Player and Toast Titanium will see them when you open/import the file. ( the insult is that FCP X won't see the chapter markers if you import it back into FCP X ... on another system for instance!)

Of course only Toast will burn the DVD will somewhat customizable Menus.

I do it this way whenever my DVD's need two or more seperate titles on them. You can make an OK Menu with your own background. Toast still makes the button though. They can be text only if you like.

Thanks. I have a Toast 14 Pro that I haven't loaded yet and will try. Don't know if there's any difference in the MyDVD app between the two. The real insult is having to run an old copy of OSX so that iDVD will be able to render the video. I was on with Apple Pro Apps support and asked why it would work in Mavericks and not under El Capitan and all I got was that it wasn't supported anymore, which didn't readily explain why a MOV file that QT sees the chapters on won't render under iDVD no matter the creation codec source or even coming from iMovie (older version under El Capitan) :-(

Yeah be careful with iDVD.

It's my recollection that it encodes the Video as MPEG2 but leaves the audio uncompressed instead of compressing it as AC3. ( probably to avoid paying Dolby the license fees since iDVD was a 'free' product ).

This meant that many DVD players would choke on playback. It caused a lot of trouble in my experience when students would use it because DVD Studio Pro had a learning curve.

So I'd steer clear of it ... if you google Mac DVD Menu Design theres a free, open source app out there that lets you custom lay out buttons etc ... and a couple on the App Store too I think.

In fact you *can* design you own Toast layouts but it's done in XML ... again there's stuff on the web about it.

After a LOT of mucking around ( including fighting with Adobe's Encore ( if you can get it ) and DVD Studio Pro ( which is now buggy) I concluded that whatever life DVD's have left can be served with simple text button lists on a custom background ala Toast.

Aside FCP 10.3 has more DVD menu functionality than 10.2 if you haven't updated. But still one Project per disk.

Karl,

I could import to iDVD and the chapters are recognized immediately and the template builds a chapters (scenes) page off the title page. It even plays fine within iDVD to "test" the end results of the build. It fails when it goes to acutally build the output file, be that a VIDEO_TS folder, stratight to disk, or to an img file. Did yours work all the way through to a working DVD? I mean DVD Studio Pro certainly offers a lot of features, but not sure if it supports some of the latest formats, e.g BluRay etc. It's odd that something as old as Studio Pro might be working by iDVD doesn't. :-(

for me good old DVD Studio Pro is still the go-to app for any sophisticated DVD work. if i need very simple DVDs or Blurays i just use what's built-in to fcpX. great quality and the option of easy rate conform if necessary through project settings. subtitles as markers also works well. for me the times of complex menus that look better than the actual content is over. does anybody miss them?

It may come down to loading up DVD Studio Pro (which leaves the next question of will it be supported or run in Sierra)!! :-) I tried Roxio's MyDVD from Toast 14 and it didn't recognize the chapter markers out of FCPX or iMovie 11 (v9.0.9)..

Don't disagree either with complexity statement, which is why iDVD was so nice. I just want a quick easy way to import a file, have all the chaptering laid out, and where all I have to do (if I want) is drop some static images in, change a font, etc. iDVD was a truly straight foward way to get there. I can also always build a real quick Mavericks image to boot to just to get the Video_TS folders and finish up everything back in El Capitan as far as the burns.. Just seems SO ridiculous that if QT can see the chapters that there is something in iDVD that is now locking it out.. :-(

Yes it worked all the way through to final DVD, tested on an old Sony DVD player & a Samsung Blu Ray. If you need to make a Blu ray, Adobe Encore still works in El Capitan if you have a CS6 copy.

Which Toast and MyDVD version were you using? I loaded up Toast 14 and the MyDVD that came with it, but when I imported a file with chapters in it, it did not pick up the chapter markers..
