Great video, Thomas!

I agree with all the features that you listed. It would be great to have them in FCPX!

To add two more "iMovie features" to your list:

  1. Updated UI, in line with the new Yosemite look.
  2. Custom H.264 export, with a quality slider to adjust the Bit Rate of the file

Both items were mentioned in this article by Alex Gollner.

Considering that iMovie 10 and FCPX share basically the same code, I don't see a reason why all these features couldn't be implemented in the next FCPX update... however they name it, 10.1.5 or 10.2.

I don't know iMovie 10 that well, but I imagine there must be a few more features in there that could be useful inside FCPX as well. Would anyone care to add more to Thomas' list?

You can already place In/Out points on timeline clips. What am I missing on that one?

Ben, if you want to do In and Outs on the fly with the keyboard in fcpx, you can only do it on the primary storyline. In iMovie, you can use them on whatever clip you have selected. This would be particularly useful when cutting music in a Connected Storyline.

The #1 feature I'd like to see make its way to FCP X is the skin tone balance and white balance based on eyedropper. It works well and we have nothing like it in FCP X.

Denver Riddle might just fix that soon, although not for free: coming.colorgradingcentral.com/colorfinale/

In case you haven't read it, there is a thread discussing this upcoming plugin for FCPX with very interesting information. This is what we know so far:

  • The UI will be a floating window or HUD (no overlays on top of the viewer messing with the scopes readings).
  • It brings traditional color wheels, curves, and a lot more controls (almost certainly, eyedroppers) to FCPX!
  • It will be layer based, allowing for multiple corrections per shot (like the built-in CC controls).
  • It will be able to manage LUTs.
  • It will be updated for free quite often. They have the coding capability and a very ambitious roadmap. Adding masks, Mocha tracking and much more is on their roadmap for future updates.

Looks very promising!

Oh, I know about Denver's new tool. And as I may or may not be under NDA, that's all I can say about it. :)

Still, it seems a real shame to have these eyedroppers in iMovie and not in FCP X. Most people I teach don't have the need for extra colour grading software, but they'd love an eyedropper.

Oh, I didn't know that iMovie had eyedroppers for color balance and matching!

I guess that's another "iMovie feature" to add to the FCPX wishlist.

Which is imovie and which is FCP X??? It seems that imovie is in many ways more advanced..

Is imovie the C-class Mercedes Benz of the NLE world? What we see in iMovie will in 2-5 years find its way into FCP X or FCP next gen after X??

Here's another take on it from FCPX.TV - features in Logic Pro X that would be good to see migrate to FCPX : fcpx.tv/Pages/logicproxfeatures.html

Justine, if you cannot accept no feedback... well then you will have to move on.
As said before there is alternatives out there.

I'm not sure what "Paste Attributes" advantages iMovie has over FCPX- everything in that menu has a comparable in the FCP X Paste Attributes HUD, doesn't it?

It would just be great to be able to paste specific attributes when you want to, with one specific shortcut. If you know you just want to paste colour correction attributes, In imovie theres a short cut for that. Rather than having to use a shortcut, select the parameter you want, and click okay.

It's not a huge difference, it'd just be a nice time saver. The same way you can set keyboard shortcuts for specific speed changes in X at the moment.

That "Logic Pro" link only shows "dual timecode". In Logic, that is SMPTE and music timecode. There are no "beats per minute" in video. I don't get how that would help FCPX.

Perhaps he meant displaying source and project timecode simultaneously? - I don't know. However, the Logic Pro link shows several other things that would be nice to see in FCPX.

Ah, now it play properly. Yep, several of those would be great. Plus the multi-take folder for VO recording.

The dual time code window I would like to see is select a clip in window 1 it shows the clip duration the control d feature and the original window shows the time-code of the timeline.

Having to control d then escape, then find the in or out point, then nudge a few frames, count in my head, then control d, then escape then find the in or out point, nudge nudge, count...

When there is 2 time code windows, you select an in or out point, the duration displays, and you nudge...far fewer keystrokes..over a long edit, this adds up to a saving of time..

I also like how iMovie can skim video clips from iPhoto, along with setting I/O from the same. Hope this comes to FCPX when the new Photos app is released.
