1.24.14 film edited in FCPX?

Apple explains very well how iPhones, iPads and Macs were used to film the new 1.24.14 Happy 30th Birthday, Mac film; yet it does not mention if FCPX was used at all to edit the footage. Maybe fcp.co could find out.

Angus Wall cut it along with 21 assistants. I wonder if FCP X 10.1 was up for the challenge.

21 assistants? I hope that was for the shooting, not the actual editing. 21 people to edit that? Really? It is a great piece, but 21 editors for a Mac promo...

FCPX could have edited that easily. But it was probably done with Avid or FCP 7.

21 assistants because it was shot all around the world, so a lot if ingest in lots if different places, to upload to a central server.

Looking at the video it was only filmed on a iPhone... so I would suggest it was also edited on one. That would make more since as marketing standpoint.

I would imagine that of the 21 editors, most of those were assistants to log and pre-sort the footage.

There's no indication in any of the stills or BTS video that FCPX was used. I would have to presume that to mean it wasn't.

Which is too bad. Cause it obviously could have.

Behind the scenes is out today. But, no mention of what was used in post. Not a good sign.

I'd hesitate to guess that with all the other logistical issues at hand, that putting the director on a new edit system (he's likely an AVID guy) was an extra wrinkle they didn't need. And perhaps this was one of those cases where an AVID Isis system is really the cat's ass.

I would have been great if FCPX had an iCloud-based collaborative workflow solution ready for this, but my 3rd hand understanding is we're a while away from that.

06/21/11: “I’m blown away by what Apple has done with Final Cut Pro,” said Angus Wall, Academy Award-winning film editor. “Final Cut Pro X is incredibly modern and fast, but most importantly it lets you focus on telling your story in the most creative way, while it actively manages all of the technical details.”

www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/06/21Apple...Final-Cut-Pro-X.html

Based on that quote, I would assume that Angus Wall used FCPX but why not prominently show it in the film, BTS, or even mention it in article? This would have been a great opportunity to show off FCPX's ability in speed and organization (collaboration). Not even a shot of the 2013 MP and only one quick shot of FCPX in the Jeep. Also, they could have included a shot of their crew editing the film in this film. I guess the focus is iPhone/iPad/MacBook.

Not even a glimpse of FCPX on any of their monitors from the three photos on Apple's page....

It would be kind of embarrassing if all these Apple "consumer" devices and software (FaceTime) were up to the task of producing this 1 minute professional video except for the "pro" apps. How can you ask people to use your software for their tasks when you yourself will not use it. Yes it is beautifully shot and edited, but it's all straight cuts; it could've been done without a hiccup in iMovie or even on the same iPhone with iMovie iOS (as someone else suggested). Hopefully fcp.co can get to the bottom of this; I think its an important message either way.
Hopefully Apple is prepping something on this to be posted in the "In Action" section of the FPCX website. Anything less than this would be embarrassing: "Hey look at all these people and top notch companies using FCPX for their work, of course we wouldn't use it ourselves, are you crazy, we at Apple actually use Avid to edit our stuff."

The film is all straight cuts and could've been edited on iMovie, however, the story is about the collaboration of people to make discoveries and beautiful art. Editing the film in iMovie would make it very difficult for a collaborative environment but possible.

The point is: rapid collaboration is possible with Apple. Imagine in the near future that all camera's have built in FaceTime-like capabilities and they all stream to a central server and edited practically on-the-fly. I think Apple is on the right track, low cost tools with high collaboration and accessible by everyone.

Apple should buy WeVideo.com and link it to FCPX.

Something isn't right in this picture posted by cinemaloha. Look at the iMac facing the viewer. Why is it blank? Zoom into the picture a bit. Does it loo like the screen was replaced?

Comparing to what the other people are doing the man on the right doesn't look natural in this situation.

Hmmm.

It is a solid color desktop wallpaper that is standard. There are drive icons down the top right side, dock on bottom, nothing wrong there.

Obviously the theory we'd all like to work under is that this spot was made using a version of FCPX that hasn't been released yet- with some great features that made it possible. I'd love that to be the case!

But the truth may be far more mundane.

And Ben is right- lots of non Apple software is used to product Apple ads.

The "Designed Together"

and "Designed by Apple"

videos were almost certainly not created in Motion- though after looking at them pretty closely; if I was someone with a lot more spare time on my hands, I wager I could reproduce them pretty darn closely. Even the 3D objects in the "Designed Together" spot can now be done using mObject.

I understand that other tools have been used and will be used to create Apple ads (I'm sure Apple's website was not designed in iWeb), yet as you said, it is wishful thinking that they actually used FCPX, and thus I want to see it mentioned somewhere; and if they didn't use it, then I would like to know why was is it not used. What is in that video that cannot be edited in FCPX? Someone mentioned collaboration. Great, then there's a reasonable reason why FCPX was not used and something that the FCPX team needs to get to work on because I would be ashamed that they couldn't cut a 1 minute video shot on iPhones on a tool I am as kings others to use. I understand there are good collaboration tools in FCPX when used in a Xsan.
I am just curios as to what they used and why if not FCPX.

Whatever NLE was used to edit, I'm sure that NLE was running on a Mac. The Mac innovation and what folks are doing on it seemed to be the point of the campaign, not the specific software that was used.

Avid was first on the Mac. So was Adobe Premier and ProTools. The Mac is the hero of the spots and the computer that ushered in the revolution in design and editing. I think all the tools we have are a triumph and the hard work that went into them should be praised. When it comes right down to it you can't say that Avid, or Adobe or Apple writes better code, or have better quality people (all these NLEs are being created within 15 minutes of each other!) They just have different directions and emphasis. We shouldn't be throwing Avid or Adobe under the bus just because we like FCP.

To dictate which NLE, or DAW used to create the spot would be a little silly on Apple's part IMHO. Also who knows if it was Apple's idea or the director's to shoot on all iPhones. It the end it doesn't really matter.

Regardless it is a great spot, and shows the incredible capabilities that Apple devices have given us.
