They are not testing apps that rely on GPU very heavily. That is where the '13 MP really shines.

No monitor, no keyboard or mouse or even a trackpad.

That's all costs extra.

That's where the Mac Pro shine they will empty your pockets faster than any other Mac.

How much was that 8 core Mac Pro $7000.
Add accessories
Add apple care because you dare not walk out of the store without it.

Now we are in double digits... perceived pricing versus actual cost are a worlds of difference.
Granted this is nothing new to Editors, but really a lot of people really don't need to spend $10-12k on a suite setup.

I might buy a Mac Pro myself in a couple of years as I grow my business.
And the prices drop and 4K becomes a real factor.

90% of FCPX 10.1 users are not creating 4K content yet.

I have a 2013 iMac, fusion drive, 32gb ram, 680mx etc.. I wish I had stuck a full SSD in after recently putting an M500 in my 13" MB pro.. wonder how much slower mine will be against the new mac pro

Im still only using usb 3 external storage, so I'm assuming owners of the new mac pro will want thunderbolt 2 externals (megabucks again). Definitely aimed at medium to large businesses in my eyes.

PS would still love one though just because it looks fantastic :P

I know its not elegant but what's stopping you from putting a single SSD or SSD Raid (840 series) in a thunderbolt enclosure and putting the OS on it.
Get another Pegasus TB Raid for all your media content.
It can upgraded to a degree for the future.

I know the new Mac Pro's are pixel monsters I just can't justify the cost.
Trust me when I say I'd sublet my son's bedroom (who's still living the big life with his parents) to get a full spec one.
It's just the monster price.

To be fair, I saw a massive improvement using the 1tb fusion drive UNTIL I put the sad in my older 2010 MB pro... wow what a difference for sure opening up apps etc.

So, as to your suggestion, it sounds great (especially as the M500 480gb was only £189).

so would I just clone my current drive and copy it on to the SSD and get the iMac to somehow recognise that upon starting up?

do you then just using the internal drive as storage or a backup?

Use Super Duper to clone your drive its free.

www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

it might take an hour at the most to send it to the SSD destination.

Then hold option to choose to boot from the SSD.

Go it into system prefs and make sure the startup drive is the new TB SSD

Delete the old drive and use it for as a time machine backup dive from now on.

Cheers!

I just grabbed the first link I was familiar with.
Me I would look to put one together and save a couple hundred.

Problem is the Thunderbolt Enclosures are hard to find.

I put an Series 840 in my 2009 macbook pro and love it too... again.
I don't like throwing away good equipment.
I might not ever edit on it but I might in field if pressed to do something on the spot.

A couple of times a year I edit on my MB pro in spain (it was painful) but the SSD plus the much better FCPX 10.1 will help for sure.. just a shame I'm stuck with FW800 ports and usb 2

in hindsight for an extra £140 i should have bought the 960gb M500

What is wrong with the 2999 MacPro, I just hear how expensive a loaded Mac Pro is.
For editing especially if your not touching the 2K or above area. I do see these tube Mac's go like hot cakes in the graphic and visual effects area.

I do like to see a performance test on the entry model. Come on a workstation over 5K is going to perform no matter what... or better perform no matter what :)

The basic Mac pro in the uk starts at £2499, £8600 maxed out with thunderbolt display and £11,200 with 4k display..

Oh and you dont get a keyboard, mouse or trackpad with that..

So the OP is quite right in what he is saying but anyone who is ''Applefied" would love the TOTR gear they make.

There was a really good quote from a poster about buying apple equipment, basically saying he sees too many people spending too much on equipment they just dont need or their return on investment would not be quick enough. I fall in to this bracket at times (like a boy in a sweetshop!)

Expandability and future proofing is why the pro models are spendy. The iMacs are considered 'consumer' and are subject to planned obsolescence on a two year cycle. The pros are designed to stay somewhat current for five years or more.

iMacs are a great deal, but with the importance of the GPU increasing every year, having no way to upgrade it without buying a new one is something to consider for a longer term investment.

I don't know any professional editors upgrading their GPU every year.

What I should have said was that the all in one Macs that were state of the art when FCP X came out don't handle 4K red video very well, and in order to change that I'd need a different computer.

Watch for OWC to release the "on the go" for thunderbolt.

Well I have worked with R3D files on a Macbook Pro and iMac with no issues. What I fill is that there is misunderstanding working with R3D... why work with the original R3D files? Final Cut Pro X comes with a good solution working with transcoded files and relinking back to the R3D and sending it to Resolve. I wouldn't consider working with R3D without a finer or Thunderbolt storage. ;)

I see these Mac Pro R3D test as in more... look what it can do but not what you should do. :)
